Might be a lvl thing, I've never done any type of prerequisite and the quest works for my main. I tried with a lvl 77 and it worked, but with an 18, 32, 55 it was greyed out, like with you. Maybe you have to be reasonably close to killing them lvl wise to do it. What lvl are you?

It really depends on gear, availability of lixes, possible boxed toon. Assuming you started fresh, had no plat at any time, earned your way 100%, I'd say stick to a hybrid (dex/str/enough vit to live) build.
