How do I increase the abilities that I got from statues?

I did some of "The Favor of" quests, and I have NO idea how to increase them. They are: Fortitude, Willpower, Reflex and one other one. What do I do to increase them?

Two-hand weapons OR shield and main-hand?

Should I use the claymore I just got or the tower shield I have? I'm only level 26, so kind of a noob. World is Arawn.
