I dont believe there is a world where there is not compitition. How boring that would be. In rl dont you want a nice car, better stereo, take vacations, buy a house, get good grades, buy a new gun, or a new watch? We are created equal, but we are not robots, we all like different things and the desire to be better than the next guy.
