There is another way just post the pic you wanted in a cloud service ( dropbox, etc ) and copy the link address to the pic and then paste it in the box that says url when you are asked to upload a pic. It works like a charm at least for me anyways.

Get korra to help you out.

You can easily downsize the image, to make your avatar. You can do this by downloading any image resize app, and compress the size dimensions to the suitable size. It may be blurry at first glance, (because it is) but it looks perfectly normal in the avatar. If you need any help with this please feel free to shoot a PM.
