It makes sense for chests to be sold above their intrinsic plat value, simply because they have the chance at something great.

It is the same reason why unopened packages of sports apples of certain years can sell for large amounts of money... there is the chance of getting Gretzky, Griffy Jr., etc. rookie apple.

Often the items in a chest can pay for the chest itself. Maybe not on a one for one basis, but if several are bought you can make out all right.
