Generally discussing why necro posting is lockable.

#1
Ok, this has always botherd me. For those who don't know, necro posting is pretty much posting to old threads. No matter the reason, if you find an old thread and post on it its considerd taboo and mods will lock it.

Why this bothers me is because the solution is to start a new topic, then post a link to the old thread you are actually responding too. Meaning that everyone else who reads your post has to open a new window to read the old thread, then come back and respond to the new topic.

I for one hate opening links, i rarely do it. What is the difference? In the end the old post still gets read, we just have to open a link to read it. Can anyone explain this? Btw i am generally discussing this. I am in no way offering feedback or suggestions. I generally want to discuss this topic. Feedback not needed, suggestions? Send em elsewhere. General discussions though, are more than welcome. I genuinely hope we can have a general discussion about this...... Might have gone a bit overboard with the last few statements ;)

I do my best to tidy up the necro posts by deleting/locking, just because the game has moved on so far in the last couple of years that the old thread is usually not relevant and the later posts become misleading. So for me it's about keeping the information posted relevant and not misleading.
There is a problem though mods arent selective on it if they see a thread is old they lock it but there are some topics that imo should be kept to one thread instead of 50 of the same topic. Any old post that is still relevant should be left unlocked because its still relevant only topics that have outdated info should be lock. An example of a topic that shouldnt be locked would be an idea for the game that is still not implemented in the game yet but got support from ppl in the past. Instead of being forced to make a fresh topic ppl should be able to necro that topic and continue it. This would show the overall support of that single idea since it would have the combined info instead of 10 different topics with 3-10 posts in each topic.

The answer is simple.
Moderators want to "do their job" by following the set of guidelines admin gave to them when promoted. When they see a post that is 3 months old they get all excited and lock the post. They don't actually look at the big picture and see how the post was actually helpful to the forums because they are so caught up in their mod power scheme. I'm not saying this because we have bad moderators or something like that, I just have the expierence as a forum Admin to tell you that it's just what is happening and we just need a better set of Moderator guidelines for them to follow.

For example, Topics about soloing the avatar of donn in update 2 should be locked... But something from the beggining of the update explaining why a certain skill sucks, should not - but it does anyway, Why? Because for some reason posts over a certain amount of time should be locked. The fix is to either increase the timeframe or use common sense.

If a thread hasn't been posted on in months there's a reason.. People didnt find it important/didn't care. So I personally don't want to see it floating around again.
I do see the point people are trying to make and I do agree a bit on it. In the beginning of the forum we merged many topics of the same subject. Now topics get lost pretty quick and become old. I do think if a topic is still relevant it shouldn't be locked directly as long as new feedback gets added.
Just bumping old topics I too find a bit annoying.

That particular thread at that time may die but later on we usually end up seeing the same post made my different ppl. While a new thread may come up without support it usually dies and those who has been on the forums for a while see the same kinds of posts all the time and after posting on several of them over and over ppl just stop posting. The reason is simple ppl can only be ignored for so long till they realize the particular idea wont ever happen so no point in supporting another thread. If we could bring back older topics on the same discussion it farther supports the players want for that particular topic. 1 new thread with 5 posts or 16 old threads combined with 100+ posts which do u think would be noticed more?
