What is difference between attack and damage?

#1
i know i'm lvl 36 and i should know better but... i don't know the difference between attack stat and damage stat  lol, i'm stupid
I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.

I've had to look at this stuff a lot in Beta to try to figure out how things work. I can't say that I am 100% correct, but this is what I have puzzled out so far.

Attack vs Defense figures if an auto-attack hits. And DMG vs Enemy Armor figures how much it hits for.

Both Attack and Defense are totally useless in terms of Skills and Spells, because those ALWAYS hit. Attack & Defense are only relative to auto-attack non-skill based damage.

Attack and Defense are relative to how often you get hit, or how often you hit. So Druid Spell Howling Wind is "supposed" to lower a mob's Attack, meaning it is supposed to make things miss you more. Same as abilities that raise defense, same idea. Things will miss you more. Except when they are using their skills on you. Again, those will still hit you normally escaping the confines of the buff or debuff.

Damage vs Armor is the actual amount of damage that is inflicted once you already succeed in your Attack. Armor figures how much Damage is taken away, (in a equation of a certain amount of armor per DMG point I think it's 10 armor to 1 point of DMG) from the base damage once figured. This is again relative to auto-attack, as skills usually work within their own resistances, fire, ice, magic, pierce, crush slash etc. (I would imagine resistance would feed into armor as well in terms of physical DMG but I haven't figured out that forumula yet)

Sometimes some weapons such as sleds use both crush and ice DMG I have no idea how exactly to figure that out in terms od how lures affect that DMG parceling but I aim to do it soon

Feel free to correct me if you know better

wow Teaweasel

now that was VERY accurate ><

i was gna reply to him and say (attack causes the damage) so the higher the attack, the higher the damage inflicted Obviously , but i cant explain more or better than the way u explained

This is incorrect. Anyone who uses skills/ spells knows that Defense IS critical when it comes to hitting/ successfully using the skill/ spell. Your Defense is 2X your Dexterity + anything that gives you a bonus. If your Dex/Def is too low, your skills/ spells will get interrupted more (because you are being hit by mobs) and won't get successfully casted. This is especillay true when trying to cast the slower skills/ spells!

Don't believe me? Try using a Druid with 5 Dex vs. one with 100 and casting Natures Touch even....

Tea wasn't suggesting that the spells always succeed in casting, rather, rather that when the damage type skills ARE successfully cast, the enemy does not get a 'saving throw' to avoid the effect of skill like they do with an auto-attack (which can be dodged, blocked, etc.) Resistances however, can reduce the amount of damage sustained, and some debuffs can be resisted.

What you are describing, omaomaoma, is also true. If you have higher dexterity, then you will be more likely to successfully dodge an auto-attack, therefore you will be less likely to get interrupted mid-cast, and have an easier time getting off skill based attacks.

At least, this is my understanding of the battle mechanics - please correct me if am wrong on anything!

This is incorrect. Atleast for melee classes. My warrior has had 5 dex forever and my melee skills never miss or get interrupted. No I can't cast bandage in middle of a fight but all my others skills hit no problem.
