in avalon we use a dkp system, with a separate pool for each boss
Also takes quite some work to keep it going eh?
Yes, it does require a lot of attendance tracking. But we try to eliminate luck from distributing raid gear as much as possible, you essentially earn items completely based on effort, and the only thing that luck plays part is what item drops that you wanted when it's your turn to have the highest priority in the system, e.g. a dark helm. But we also addressed that part by allowing gear upgrades or trades and giving priority to those who are upgrading, so people don't pass on dark items to wait for shadows/void.
It's a nifty system, if I may say so myself, which includes points decay so new recruits are allowed to eventually compete with veterans in a few months as long as they're active enough. In some dkp systems, veterans just totally dominate with massive amount of unused points. It also addresses the issue of point-hoarding and so folks would be wise to spend their points rather than hoard them, which keeps the rotation of gear healthy.
The only bad part is that there are just so plenty of bad loot, we bank over 80% of our drops which no DKP system can fix. We just give some away for free or discounted cost, but even then, most loot items are so bad we still end up with a bank full of crap items.
