'Grinding' pretty much is doing something over and over again in order to acquire something (eg. exp, skills, items, ranks, unlocks, objectives, etc.).
TL:DR The name changes with the objective. Gold/items is farming for gold/items. Lvl up skills, 'skilling'. Ranking.
NOTE. The next texts give some examples about different meanings of Grinding.
I can recall Fire Emblem Awakening, your characters can Class Up and Reclass in order to unlock the unique abilities and stat growths of each class. To unlock Gamble (-5 hit, +10% Critical) you need to Reclass and lvl up to 10/20 while in Barbarian Class, which is also the only way to Class Up to Berserker at lvl +10/20. The grinding parts here are: obtaining enough Exp to lvl up to unlock abilities and Class Up, and acquiring Gold to buy ClassUp/Reclass items.
Recalling Dragon Quest IX - Sentinels of the Starry Skies, there is Alchemy which enables the enhancement of armor and weapons, potion brewing, etc., Class Change/Mastery, and Weapon Mastery. The grinding parts here: farming all kinds of items for alchemy, lvl up to 99 in order to obtain Class Mastery, and while lvling up you get Skill Points to place them in the Weapons available for each class, etc.
I hope this helps a bit.
