Re: Hand to hand weapons - which classes?

For those of you that say casters cannot use knives... they actually can. But maybe the "bodkin" isnt the best name to use in this case. Perhaps it should be an "athame"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athame

According to this article, mages should even be able to use swords
On the other hand, the athame stands as one of the four elemental tools in Wicca; traditionally standing for fire, as does the ritual sword. (From the known origins of Wicca, with Gardner's own Book of Shadows, the athame represents fire; where the wand corresponds to air. Other varieties of Wiccan practice may switch those two around.) The other three elemental tools are the wand, the pentacle, and the cup or chalice. These four magical tools correspond to four 'weapons' of significance in Celtic myth - the sword, the spear, the shield, and the cauldron (and/or grail).

+1, this is pretty cool. But in my opinion, the knuckles should be able to be used by everyone.

I think that there should be a division between classes, accept for one thing. It doesn't make sense for a ranger to use a bow in close range. I think it would make sense for them to use a dagger of some sort while fighting up close. Maybe throwing knives could be a middle ranged attack for rogues and ranger that are used as the default weapon in close range. Back in topic, the knuckles should be solely for melee classes, mainly rogue and warrior. Druids and mages need to use magic weapons, not melee.

Hey there, we've added hand to hand weapons like knuckledusters etc but I'm not sure which class they should go on.

Should they be for rogues only, melee only or for everyone?

Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

Thanks!
Any class that gets Hand-To-Hand ability should get hand to hand weapons. Otherwise, how do you propose they level up that ability? Fight with their bare hands like in Beta? It was ridiculous fighting mobs like that.

I like the idea of all classes wielding whatever weapons. However, the mechanics of the game should not allow casters to be effective melee fighters. Just kinda throws off the purpose of being a spell caster.

I hope that makes sense ;)

Well if I get to choose between a wand that doesn't do much damage, and is kinda slow, or a hand weapon that does as much damage and is faster for better chance of interrupting, I'm gonna go with my fists.

I see no reason why every class should not have access to the hand-to-hand skill. To the best of my knowledge a ranger can get the sword skill and use swords, they just can't use some of their skills unless using a bow. Same with rogues who can't use some skills when using a spear. I would like to say that a class specific skill for Mages and Druids that requires a totem, wand, or staff would be in order. I feel that that would add more play style options. Would it be so bad to have an interrupt based, hand-to-hand Druid if they were sacrificing a potential ability that requires Totem or Staff to use? Even if it was something as simple as a passive ability that gained you energy or health depending on ability level while said weapon was equiped. Multipale build types are fun. Using my Mage as an example, I built him originally on the fire lure/cloak/fireball path with 2k hp. I recently changed to an energy shield build with almost 2k energy. Both builds are fun and both have their strengths and weaknesses. Druids have even more build variety. I see no reason this type of game plan should be limited, as long as it remaines balanced, because the idea of a Mage or Ranger holding knuckledusters makes some people twitch.

Druids don't use Magic weapons, they use a slow staff and an average totem, they literally can in the update not use any weapon and just swing their fists...to raise their unarmed skill...

So are we saying that...wearing fist weapons is non-Druid? If swinging fists is? It's a complete mistake to think that, a Mage has fists, a Ranger has fists..

Unarmed has the possibility of being a great boxing or brawling skill, are we saying that only rogues and warriors can do it?

Pfft, riddiculous.

The knuckle weapons should be for everyone! Since everyone can learn the ability. Hand to hand is kind of a barbarian skill lol, but everyone should have access to it. have the hand-to-hand combat less effective then the original weapon skills, but give everyone access to it.

Hahaha, now that I think about it, I was talking to a friend about this, and we had come up with an idea to have a lux item that would be boxing gloves    I mean, who wouldn't want to see someone go one-on-one with deadroot using their fists??
