'Retard', although used as an insulting word by narrow-minded people on occasion, actually has a proper meaning that is not insulting at all. That's why you can buy 'retardent's and things like that. If people get offended simply by seeing/reading/hearing the word 'retard', they need to grow a pair.

Actually check how it's presented in the sentence, if it's not used in an offensive manner then theirs no need it call someone up on it - and that's coming from someone who's Uncle has Down's syndrome, so it's not like I'm oblivious to the matter.
