I only wanna receive messages from my friends
yes i agree, if someone send you a message, they need to be your friends. It will prevent frikking noobs to bother you, freaks, jerks to harass you.

I don't want to connect to receive hundred of spams. What is 10 gold ??? Just a kill, so let's say some asses want to beg 100 players, he can easily do it after 15 min in shalemont or lir.

Messages and transfers should only be possible between friends.

Playing devil's advocate here, consider the following situations:
  • A player wishes to join a clan, but would like some more information about the clan. However, the clan leader is not online when the prospective clan member is. Therefore, the prospective member sends a mail to the clan leader, who then responds with some information.
  • Two players, who are not in-game friends, agree to a trade on the forums, but are unable to be online at the same time. Therefore, they use the in-game mail system to conduct the trade.
These situations would not be possible if the mail system only allowed you to send and receive messages between friends.

@ eliminater : the main problem is for some high profile players who will receive tons of junk spam. I don't want to spend my time to track down players to Block them.

@ admin : very honestly, as a chieftain i am already bothered enough by noobs hunting me and harassing me to get into my clan, asking nooby questions, begging for gold. I don't want to writte down a presentation of my clan to potential applicants. They can discuss and ask live questions to me when i am on, or to my management team, we always have someone on.

Regarding trades, if players agree to establish regular trades and trust each other, then they can add themselves as friends, so concluding a trade wether players are on or not is irrelevant as soon as they addeed themselves as friends. Becoming friends and enabling someone to send you private message is a must, a privilege between friends. If not, wispering is enough.

I think you have really no ideas how many times chieftains are harrassed by countless players, especially to be insulted, to solved stupid dramas. I can accept to read a message from a friend, but to read dozens of messages from unknown players, freaks and ennemies... No way.

If you do implement this, then you need to allow us to block indefinitly a sender, preventing him to send you a futur message, EVEN if he is not online !!!

Shadowkrar, I completely understand where you are coming from regarding the potential for clan chieftains and other high profile players to get spammed once the mail system is in place. However, there’s one huge reason why the mail system should not be limited to “only friends”:

If part of the purpose of the mail system is, indeed, to reduce the incidence of scamming via transfers, then limiting the mail system to “only friends” completely defeats the purpose. How so? Given that most transfers are between two toons owned by the same player who only owns one device, how are they supposed to friend their alt from their main? The most obvious answer is to share their account details with a third party in order to add their alt as a friend of their main. This, of course, is a violation of the CH terms of service, and is even more problematic for reasons which should be obvious.

And here are a few suggestions for OTM on how to address the spam issue:
  • Implement simple filters on our mailbox: simple tabs or checkboxes that would allow us to see only messages from
    • Friends
    • Clanmates
    • Non-friend/Non-clanmate
    • (perhaps an option to see messages from blocked users)
    • Unread messages
    • Read Messages
    • All Messages
Also implement tools for bulk operation on our inbox: mark all as read, delete all messages, etc. That way we can just bulk delete our Non-friend/Non-clanmate mail.
  • Tiered Postage rates: one rate (10g) for friends and clanmates; another rate 20g+ for people you have no relationship with; 100g+ for people who have blocked you
  • Recipient of the messages gets all or a portion of the postage fee. My suggestion is either all the fee minus a 5g commission to OTM, or barring that, half the fee. If we're going to have no choice but to receive messages from people we don't want to receive messages from, at least give us a token for the inconvenience. This, of course, would have to be implemented such that it doesn’t give birth to new scams.
While you're at it, please also address the issue of us getting disconnected due to being "inactive" while we are chatting or writing a support ticket. This issue will affect even more players than it does now if the game disconnects us while we are writing messages via the mail system.

Oooooo, very good point Light!

I light your ideas about the mail system structure as well. Thoughtful, as usual. ;)
