Not really. However the quartz and diamond wands add to fire and ice ability, so then they are kind of necessary to have.

Admin correct me if I am wrong but based on the discussions in many threads:

Currently all weapons either do additional damage based on STR or not. The combat engine is not capable right now of giving extra damage based on a stat other than STR. The next revision of the combat engine will permit DEX for bows and FOC for Wands etc.

Then a wand will actually do some energy free damage. This is the biggest downfall of the mage right now. No E = No damage.

Mages are only OP in PVP only if they have a specific build. The current builds for mage are:
  • DPS: lots of damage fast but wait 5 min between fights. Poor for leveling and you spend a lot of time doing nothing in a boss fight but great for PVP
    TANK: Fire cloak and take the hits. Let the other guy kill himself. Emphasis on regeneration and recovery in battle. (not a popular build very limited use will benfit greatly from FOC based Wand Damage)
    Leveling: Emphasis on recovery between fights to decrease down time and increase mobs per minute.
    Balanced: general all around build
