Player sentinels - an industry improving new use of afk

So my thread on afk got locked...great job guys with your off-topic method posts.

To start this post off; one of my favorite parts about everquest was "sentinel npc's" they were by gates always and if a mob turned out to be too hard for you, you could run it up to the sentinel and it would kill the mob for you. Very fun.

What would be even more fun than that?

Player sentinels!

So there could be areas where you could stand that whenever someone ran up to you with a mob, your auto attack would start attacking the mob as well, but you wouldn't move.

This would kill 2 birds with one stone, allowing for people to just stand around in one spot if they want... as well as help other players at the same time.

You could even make these special spots so that mobs would not normally spawn near that area so that the person just standing there with auto-attack on can't kill any of the other active-players monsters.

PM me if you missed the link to my method for legitamite afk :)

Won't work here, if I need help and ran to a sentinel I would leave the agro zone and lose the mob.

What would do that here are safe zones. Like running through the OW. If I can have a safe zone say between the ghosts, eyes, and trees. Then another one just past the swamps before hitting the golems. Maybe one just past ghost alley.

Well they could be hostile areas just like now.

What I'm kinda saying is safe areas like you describe, no monsters would spawn there and if you wanted to loose a monster, the player sentinel would attack it.

Now, the only change that would have to be made is that your auto-attack would work on mobs that are attackig someone else if they are within an arms length from you.

That is exactly how they worked in everquest, but they were npc's

Obviously I don't know if this would work in the "current version of the engine" like they say, But I really believe things to do while afk could really be gamechanging for the whole industry.

Afk shops, afk sentinels, ect. Why not embrace this practice instead of looking down on it?

Its like punishing someone for watering their grass with sprinklers on a timer instead of doing it by hand

We would still be effected by the log out timer and if the logout timer was removed then people would afk the old way. I don't feel a way to afk helps the game.

But do you see my logic? Its like if someone figures out a way to be more productive, why should that be punished?

In the real world people invent machines all the time that are automated; some electrical, some software, some mechanical. Should we just go back to the stone-age and do everything by hand?

If ingenuity is punished, people will go elsewhere where it is rewarded.

I'm not saying that area would be exempt from the log out timer. It shouldn't be.

People can just stand there, whether they themselves are doing things to keep the log-out timer from expiring, or if some other entity (robot, program, toddler ) is keeping the log-out timer from expiring. Make sense?

Yes but even in the real world there are laws sort of like game rules here. Laws are made for the betterment of the community.
