Scamming:The Real Deal

Admin: Please share with us your unlimited knowledge on how to avoid these scams, and explain why being scammed like this does not merrit a refund.

This was originally posted in an old topic, and I'd like to know what people think of it.

People are always saying "don't trade your stuff and you wont ever be scammed." But this is false because there are several ways to actually SCAM someone in this game. There was a character in mabon who would shout that was selling heroic gloves or boots, and would eventually find a buyer. He would show them the heroic gear, then during the trade, swap it out for ancient linen! It was extremely hard to detect the scam because heroic gloves and linen have the EXACT same picture. He probably scammed dozens of people like this including myself, and I doubt anyone got any of their gold back, because I sure as hell didn't, even though it was the designers fault for allowing an exploit like this to be taken advantage of.
Here's another example of a new SCAM: There is a player in herne who has been scamming people by telling them that he will give them 1 million gold a some items for all of their lux gear. He opens trade and puts 100,000 gold in the gold slot, and let's say 1 earth rem. The numbers from the rem and the gold then merge together in the trade screen to look like 1,000,001 gold. Several of my friends have been SCAMMED this way, and I doubt support has done any refunds, even though it's the game developers fault for allowing this exploit to be in the game. I would show you a pic of this last example, but I don't have enough gold because I was SCAMMED.
You see, not all scams are from a stupid player giving his items away to another at his own free will. There are problem with the game that people have taken advantage of and have used to SCAM innocent players. Support should definately refund players for these scams, because it is their fault. Yet they haven't, and very well may never will. They need to take responsibility for their mistakes, refund the players who have spent hundreds of dollars on their game just have it all stolen, and fix the holes in the game as soon as possible.

They added a delay to the tick box so the swapping thing couldnt happen and also added a confirmation box. This box you should check what items and gold your trading carefully. It isn't OTM's fault. They've done what they can to try and reduce the amount of scams but it boils down to the players. If they're smart enough they won't be scammed. And obviously because of the mail system transfers shouldn't be a problem anymore.

When trading stuff use someone who had something to lose. E.g. A cheif of a top clan... Aileron, myself, elim, guffy. Not all cheifs but if we was to scam our names would be tarnished and would effect our reputation. This could ruin our game a high lvl 150 respected player wouldn't lose that for some erotic gloves and boots. I wouldn't lose my rep for full rad,exp pendant and a camo personally and I am sure most high lvls think this way.

There are a lot of sob stories about scamming, but this guy's seem legitimate. Because of the overlap of the 100000 gold and the 1 rem it looks like 1000001 gold, interesting (someone make a pic?). Still seems like one of those things where if its too good to be true, it is! I would be skeptical about why he is putting 1 rem in with a million gold, too...

Still, it's a new one, and OTM does not have anything in place to guard against this. If it showed in the chat box how much gold was added during a trade, this wouldnt be an issue, but I for one feel like this guy deserves some help in this situation.

I'd be curious what would happen say you put in 100 or even 1000 fettles. Would that mean you could place only 10,000 or even only 1,000 gold into the window? This is the only thing I see could be fixed slightly.

Correct me if I'm wrong, though, but doesn't the text in the chat window specify the amount of gold placed in the trade window as well as quantity of any items? Unless I am wrong and it does not specify in the chat window, I have zero sympathy if you get scammed this way. You should always take the extra two seconds to click on each item and look through the chat window to confirm what you are trading. If you go quickly and make assumptions, then that is your own silly fault. It's not OTM's fault if you can't open your eyes and check what is being traded. I understand some items have the same picture, but that is a very poor excuse to hide behind as a reason why you got scammed. Just own up to the fact you made a mistake and didn't double check before the final window click.

This is like being mad at your teacher because they gave you a test to check how well you follow directions: The test says on the first step to read all directions before doing anything else. The second step says to write your name at the top (immediately you write your name at the top). 20 steps later it says if you did not follow directions and wrote your name at the top you have failed. Then you take it out on your teacher because the test was "unfair". Just like the test, the trade window if completely fair. OTM, the "teacher", can't help it if you don't follow directions...

To add to my previous post ^ I just tested this "glitch". It isn't a glitch. The numbers do not perfectly line up. You can clearly tell what is gold and what is not unless you are just being absent minded (I tested on iPad and iPhone and both show a differentiation). Item quantities show in the text window. The only thing I would suggest adding as an additional safe guard would be text for the gold added in the text window because currently nothing shows up.

My previous point still stands. It is your own silly fault if you get "scammed". Just double check before you click yes and you can never be scammed.

Wow Solarus, self satisfied much?

There should be a message for gold and also number formatting eg commas between thousands (1,000,000). I have played on iPad and iPod and it is very hard to see everything on an iPod. Did you use a magnifying glass for you testing? Not everyone has 20/20 vision and also if you play where the lighting isn't perfect the screen loses clarity eg glare.

Well you know it is really nothing like that, we are direct customers buying a product not pupils in a class that might be free or not.

This might more accurately be like being a pupil in a class where you have prepaid for your text books. The teacher places them on the desks and leaves the room well before class time. When you arrive there is no text book on your desk. The teacher's response is "I placed all the books and if someone stole one then that is not MY problem".

Players can pay a lot of real world money for gold and OTM has a moral duty to show adequate care. It is simply bad business to let problems persist without at least the appearance of action. A reputation for allowing scamming will affect new player numbers surely and therefore income.

I understand that getting scammed is your own fault, but what I dont get is why so many items have the same picture. I was scammed once because someone was trading me a bow of the icelord. Last second he switched it out for a short bow, and I didn't notice. It was my fault, but things like this could be prevented if so many valuable items didnt have the same picture as low value items.
