dkp (or "dragon kill points" as it originated from older games with dragons as the usual endgame bosses, like EverQuest) system is like an attendance/scoring system. You earn "points" for attending raids, or other things you do for the clan, such as camping, farming quest items, etc. There are many types of dkp systems as well, the traditional one is that you use the points you earn like money and you "purchase" items your clan accumulates from bosses, whether it's fixed price or by auction. The value of the item is then deducted from your total points.

Traditional and bidding systems have many flaws, and in recent years, many adjustments have been made to solve issues, and gave rise to variations like Zero Sum DKP and EP/GP with decay.

How are the dkp calculated? Like how does the clan keep track of them because a player could lie and give himself a few dkp

Some clans use google spreadsheets. Some clans, like ours, use dkp management websites like guildlaunch.com. The attendance can be taken by anybody but it's the administrator of the dkp system that gives out the points.
