i would suggest reading forums, but since most of mages here are here to cry only, it'll be tough
u might create a thread and someone will just answer u 'quit mages', dont listen to those
i gotta say i didnt like flint topaz and opal at all, due the lvl reqs
as a mage, skip flint/quartz, but try getting diamond (diamond has lvl req of 80), diamond isnt on shop now, theres opal instead (opal is weaker except weapons, but also got lvl req of 100)
try buying diamond cane from ppl, dont buy the armour unless u really need, try getting good lux crown tho and keep with the questline armour for having 'good' armour

whenever u can, get the adamant, since warden met and frozen wands are really lame, and if ur a full fire mage, obsidian set (not wep) will be awesome
wyrmbone and ancient wyrmbone wands are also lame, so if u dont get aggy grim, stick with adamant

Also the shadow armor quests are good for mages and druids and the armor is free. People are usually willing to help you kill the bosses each day to get them. I know I will help out with them.
