I have used a shield from 170-189, and I would highly reccomend it. Once I get my dl offhand I will use it most of the time, but even then I will still keep the shield for fighting lower bosses and etc.

A few numbers that I have always thought were interesting:
The amount of armor on a mage with full dl: 272
The amount of armor on a warrior's dl bp: 271

In the beginning i was adamantly against a mage with a shield...until I hit firbies. I very quickly learned that if I wanted to solo and live something had to change. Shield of the bastion was the greatest investment i made for my mage, seriously. With shield i had 3k hp and 572 armor plus the evasions. Couple this with 1800dmg absorption from 50/35 shield and my 500 ammy shield and it was like a new toon. I deffinatly recommend shield for any solo mage.

also, the new ammy shield skill is awesome. Its instant caast. So,cast it and then cast your real e shield.

Nowadays, I just run with a druid, so shield is pretty much useless. IMO, mages shouln't be soloing.

well, on some games lvling with groups is required, like for dungeons, here we dont have that and also we can be invincble with plat while lvling, so many ppl prefer soloing

i think that none of the rpg games should be a solo one, it also gives a use for the tank while lvling, here tho, if u dont wanna group, just waste some money/gold and get plat items.

My problem has alway been that there never seems to be the right combination of people available to level at the same time. Also, when I leveled from 180-189 there was no group option. There simply were not enough wyrms or people the same level at the same time. (the only grouping i did then was with another mage for a bit, but he leveled faster than me so we had to stop.)

I had the same problem as smart for grouping. I lvled extremely fast and flew by most people. 100-180 in less than 2 weeks so most people i would group with just simply got left behind. But if you are looking to save money grouping is much cheaper by far.

Whats the " new ammy shield skill"??

An instant cast shield that blocks 500 damage over like 10 seconds and has around 1 minute cool down.

After reading posts I decided to get a shield of Bastion. I solo train a lot and run through resto pots like candy. With the shield there is an enormous difference. I am a 172 mage with the 500 dmg ammy and e shield of course. Ok, I'm not exactly a tank now but can solo trolls which I never could come close to killing even though I used resto pot. I'm killing the same mobs without resto pots or lixes. 3 and 4 * mobs that were really tough before are no major problem. Once I get the last piece of DL, the BP, I hopefully will be even stronger. Now it's solo with frost grim and Bastion shield and group with grim and focus of Mystic The shield was expensive but think of all the gold i save on resto pots lol.

Funny thing is that even though I loose 250 focus when I switch out the Focus of Mystic for the Bastion my dmg is really the same. Ok, I still have 985 focus without the FOM but still I would have thought that I would hit with less dmg. Still getting 3-5 k on ice shards and ice blast with a 6 k now and then.
