I solo lixed at level 200 as a pure caster mage and was getting exactly 2 bars per lix, without any outside help. When you get there, seipper, I would very much like for you to go with a melee build and try to beat me. Please do it in the near future though; you may get in trouble if you post it 2 years late

Quite frankly, it is idiotic to say that energy problems go away with melee build. You will theoretically be using the same amount of skills as before, right? (if not, you're losing dps). So same dps usage, but now you have a problem: with melees you will not be able to use skills. Personally I think I use about 6k+ energy per minute of dpsing. In a 20 minute kill, thats 120k energy. Are you going to use 120 pots during that time? That's 25k worth of plat to increase your dps by a theoretical max of about 3%.

Your melees may do 300 on a 6* boss, congrats. But you'll maybe hit once every 15 seconds if you're lucky. On the other hand, my firebolt alone can do 9k every 5 seconds. But please, tell me how this melee build is so great

The best thing to do during this downtime is to recast your buffs/debuffs (lures, attune, eshield) so you can still perfect-cast as many dps skills as possible.

The reason being: I don't have extra STR puts other than what's there from the axe
I have a little bit of dex for defense purposes and added attack (I don't SOLELY rely on autos, just supplemental damage)
The added melee and Cloak damage allows me to finish off a mob instead of wasting a spell for a 200 point final hit
The thing that I like about having some melee/Cloak is that when a Firebolt or Storm misses, I'm still getting damage dealt to the mob.

You can also use a lvl 1 ice shards to finish off mobs when they are really low on hp. Imo especially at the lower levels you are short on skill points. There are far more usefull skills to use. But as long as your having fun with your build it doesn't matter.

Ice shards helps me finish often, but mine is lvl 42
Much better than cloak tho for finishing, I cant wait for when I'll have an ice mage with me.

I will explain what I said before as clearly as possible.

If you switch to a wand and or axe and melee while waiting for skills, that is better then doing nothing during downtime(full caster). There is zero argument to this, autoing during downtime is more dps then doing nothing during said time, if you can switch fast enough.

2. U wont have enough attack to actually hit the boss, that means it worths completely nothing, and no, u cant switch enough gear to make it viable.

For those of u who dont know (uhm fury), attack helps u actually land these melees on the mobs/bosses and not just have x dmg, that is something u learn when before trying to be battle/melee/crim rules mage, u actually try melee class first.

On your stat page, if it says you have 2000 attack and 900 dmg it means you'll hit for 150 dmg and less than 1/5 the time.

I can only speak from a lvl 156 fire mage experience. I did enjoy a proc weapon for a bit but found with the stargem tank lux set and offhand shield, I can pull 4 or 5 mobs and with maxed cloak of fire and just casting skills, I'm doing a lot more dmg and surviving much easier than a melee build.

But I believe it was said that fire mage wasn't a good melee build due to faster skill recast

Like I have said before, it is a weapon change, NOT a build change. If something is 900 dmg and 2000 attack and something is 40 dmg and 2000 attack, what would you choose? And it's not hurting dps as your solely doing it in downtime.

I do not do endgame bosses, but it is impossible not to work as long as you change back in time.
