I'm not a pro mage, but IMO if you want to be a mage that deals the highest damage, then you probably need to buy sigils, and buy/find some decent rings. My current build is all fire, I have maxed firebolt, cloak, incinerate, eshield, and high fire lure. Obviously, if I spent a lot of points in regen and/or sacrifice, then I wouldn’t be able to max many other offensive spells, and my damage dealt would be significantly less.
There just aren’t enough points to be able to do it all effectively. It isn’t really ideal, and this might be why to some extent that a lot of mages seem to go down the more support route (or a hybrid build).
Also, bear in mind, a lot of mages tend to purchase a lot of books of alt to switch between the two depending on the situation.
If you want to play support, then you don’t need sigils. I for one find the support build boring after a while, but each to their own. However, sometimes, I’ve noticed that in order to get accepted in a group (end game content), melee players request support mage only.
Therefore in summary:
Support mage = cheap to run
Offensive mage = expensive (lux, sigils, etc etc)
