Information About Starting Mages

#1
Hey guys!
I have been playing a warrior for a while, and now I just don't feel the need of having a warrior. Dont get me wrong, warriors are really fun and its fun to tank, but I just really like the dps aspect of the game. That being said, dps warriors are not very good relative to other classes. Tanking is also fun, but its useless to have 20 tanks in a fight.

Anyhow, forget the reasons, I am going to play a mage. I don't want people telling me they are terrible and the worst class etc. , because I will try them out for myself. However, any suggestions are helpful.

I have a couple of questions, it would be amazing if you guys could answer them:

1. Do mages NEED sigils? I can get about 50 energy ones, but more than that is too much. I am not realy willing to dump plat on sigils.

2. If I start at level 50, how many levels will:
100 knows take me?
250 knows take me?
400 knows take me?
500 knows take me?

3. I understand mages need regen lux. After getting it though, do mages have a significant decrease in damage?

4. Are there any good guides for mages?

5. Which gear/ items should I be looking to get?

6. Your opinions on mages. I suppose this one can be hateful towards mages current standing :P. Anything helps. Ie: They good, they bad etc.

I guess this can be moved to mages section, but this topic is for general discussion, and more people will see it if it remains in general discussion.

Thanks for your time!

1. imo mage without sigils (at least 300 energy) is too hard to play since energy boost expires every 45 seconds but it's not impossible.
2. don't know
3. if you get like a regen ring, it surely wastes a slot for a ring which could for exemple add dmg to your firebolt. with a good amount of sigils you don't need any energy gear.
4. there are guides for being a fire, ice, mix or support mage that you can find in this forum.
5. warden/met, or diamond, spiritshadow..
6. mages are the most expensive class to play. and as you can see in all the forum, they have no armour, their skills evade a lot, etc...

DRUIDDS - lvl 117
And many more..

1. No. But you have to put points into either energy boost and/or sacrifice. The advantage is that these can also be support skills, particularly for druids in your group/clan. In fact, my clan's druids love that I will sit at bosses and boost them so they don't have to buy pots as often.

2. Honestly, sk lixes matter on a lot of things. However, before 100, I was getting about 1-2 sk's for a level. At 100-130, I'm looking at 3-4 per level with a good group.

3. You want energization gear more than regen. Your health will be covered, for the most part, by your other important skill point investment, energy shield. Massive cost, slow cooldown, but melee mage necessity. Your damage is really related to your focus, which, honestly, is the only skill other than vitality you should put points into. Typically a 3/2 ratio is pretty good.

4. What croquette said...

5. Honestly, for armor, croquette is right. The shadow armor is pretty good, improves your focus, adds a nice skill and, most important, is free. :) I then went the met/frozen route, which I like. But darkshadow was comparable in quality to warden (and looked cooler :)) in update 3, so I used that until I got my met. Of course, the ability to use shadow armor is really nice, because you're going to be spending cash on lux items. Your first major investment should be a heroic ammy. Since then, my second investment was an energization offhand (Master's Grim, which has a 100 point focus bonus) and, third, an energization crown. Fourth, is transport. With my eboost, that has kept me pretty happy, but I'm waiting for 150 to upgrade to the 40/40 ammy.

6. Croquette has given you the bad and a view through this forum will tell you some of the many complaints as well. However, I actually enjoy playing a mage. I was pure dps (hybird) for some time, but have since been investing in lures, particularly assassin and solider lures, to help out in leveling groups. Plus, it is the only class that can create energy for others. While most mages use that to create more energy for themselves, a proper use of the skills can make a mage essential for groups. Plus, unlike other classes, a proper use of skill rings of different types can make a major difference in how a mage performs.

Enjoy!

Take a look at the wiki in my sig. check out the experience page as well as the mage page. I hope this becomes a great reference for you :)

And honestly if you don't know much about mages, it probably isn't a good class for you. It is the most expensive to play while the warrior is the least expensive. Also a normal mage build doesn't help much on bosses, no one will be going out of their way to group you for them. Also a normal mage isn't great for group leveling so people won't group you much, but you will need a group to level so it is a 'catch 22'.

Honestly I would say the mage is the last class you should make. Once you have all the other classes down and have extra money for energy regen lux and health sigils you can try a mage. It is without a doubt the highest difficulty class to play, and without much or any extra bonus for the hard difficulty.

My recommendation is make a DPS druid and max natures touch. That is a much better way to go than a mage. You get about the same DPS as a mage and also can heal yourself and others amazingly. Leveling groups will love you, you can solo level, and bossing groups will love you. You will need some energy regen lux though as well.

Why play a class where skills cost more than other classes for same damage?
Why play a class with no auto attack?
Why play a class with 1/3 the armor?
Why play a caster?

Copy this sig! :)

Now, I can afford the energy lux from any lix seller because my warrior is 127 and has a few lix items I can sell. Overall, I have played a mage before but not to a really high level. I have a decent amount of gold, and will be looking to be geared in energy regen, so I would not have to waste plat on sigils. It is an option I am willing to take it 'unfathomable gets real' :).

Anyhow, I am looking for estimate levels still.
:P

Thanks to everyone who helped!

P.s and by gear I meant rings/ braces not really the front page. I will most likely get frozen and up and also get the disk shadow or whatever armor for fun.

Have you played a druid md? Before you say its the most expensive, Druids have the same problems. At least you get energy boost and massive dps, we get higher heals but lesser dps at twice the energy cost. Study these things. You say you have a mage page then recommend not playing the class. I dont get you....

Well the lvls for those elix really depends on you. Ill give you my best judgement on the minimum and maximum you could get for the elix numbers, assuming you are leveling 100% of the time you are on elix (some people tend to waste elix time).

Starting at 50.
100 elix
Min- low 110s, max- high 130s
250 elix
Min- high 130s, max- high 160s
400 elix
Min- low 150s, max- high 170s
500 elix
Min- low 160s, max middle 180s

Minimum is assuming you are SOLO leveling and NOT using any plat items or sigs (nothing used besides the elix).
Maximum is assuming you are leveling in a GOOD group the entire time, using plat items (pots and idols), and have some sigs.

Your question on elix is pretty broad and hard to answer because it varies tremendously depending on the person and the situation, but i did my best to answer. Hope it helps.

**PS: PM me if you want some tips on leveling, I'm happy to help

Well, I am planning on getting sigils at a higher level because I dont think they are needed at level 70-100.
I also plan on solo training when no one is online, but when someone is I will try group training.

Probably:

70% - Solo
30%- Group
Mage - 196
Ranger - 182
