IS the mage really expensive to play long term?

#1
Starting fresh on the new Android server. Played a warrior on iOS and looking for a change on Android. Level a Rogue and Mage to 20 and deciding who to persue. I enjoy the Mage playstyle more, but im concerned over a few posts mentioning that in order to play a mage post 100+ you need to spend $$$ and lots of it. Is this really the case? What exactly is so expensive with a mage? I dont mind shelling out some $ for mana sigils, but not $50-$100 worth if that's what it takes.

 tl;dr: How expensive is it to play a mage, is plat 100% necessary at any point?

Also, any tips for a new mage/player without a main to twink them would be helpful as well. Thanks!

I leveled to 170 without much plat (actually just buying items to sell for gold for the most part) and used energy rejuv items until that point. Since nearing and hitting 180, I have started moving to more sigil dependency, now that my eboost and items are being outpaced by my consumption, but still havn't spent an enormous amount on plat to do it. Rather, I purchase sigil chests from plat buyers. While I have certainly spent a lot of GOLD as a mage, I wouldn't say that I've spent a lot of plat.

For tips, check out the guide. Armo did a kickass job putting that together. Also, the shadow armors really were made to help out the caster classes by providing them with decent armor for free. Take advantage of them while you collect your warden/met/frozen armor and weapon.

I have spent a lot of gold on my mage, especially on sigils. I have not had to buy any plat. You can obtain all the gear you will need ingame without plat. It will just take longer and be more difficult.

Yes, IMO, mages will require a larger investment in sigils than other classes besides druids (endgame).

If you like playing mage, keep it up. I recommend reading some of the guides on these forums.

Hey thanks for the feedback guys, I appreciate it. Going to stick with the mage and see where it takes me. Also, the guides are pretty sweet, very useful.

Had a couple Mage questions if anyone cares to answer..

-> Mage weapons, what kind of progression past the starting reward is worth it?

->Any specific items to try and hunt for while leveling up?

Thanks again

rare wands, they add focus and skill pts, theres the first wand from crook which adds like 5 foc and +1 lure of fire, then wand of secrets 20 foc +2 ice shards, grove wand 35 foc +3 lure of fire, twisted wand 50 foc +3 ice shards, drakeflame wand 75 foc +4 ice shards, all as master ones

ofc when u get to twisted and drakeflame u might already be able to get an aggy grim, which adds much more focus (125, 150, 175, dark, shadow, void, and fire/ice magic / health), or u can use the buyable wands, i think flint is useless waste of money, topaz/quartz u can skip on both if u can get diamond, diamond and opal are the same but diamond has lvl 80 req and opal lvl 100, but diamond and quartz arent buyable anymore, and adamant is the best buyable wand since wyrmbone and ancient wyrmbone wands add wand ability (which is useless)

the rest, armour and etc. u cant hunt, but u can save gold to buy, u can always use warden-met-frozen-dl, or u can go with focus gear (topaz opal adamant etc.)
offhands, well the only good offhands u can get are buyable (besides dl offhand ofc), i suggest foc offhand which provides energy regen as well, and lots of foc, and i also suggest group lvling rather than solo, as a mage u will have paper armour, which will wreck u without someone having aggro/druid/shield which will cost a lot as well

hunting for bracelets isnt that effective, unless u can get stats bracelets, wyrms and those from trolls (wyrm add to 3 stats, lower lvl, and less stats than most troll stat bracelets, and those will add 2 stats, higher lvl req but add much more, best brace adds 100-100 to 2 stats)
the rest of the bracelets that arent lux are pretty useless as a mage

rings, rings are important, rings u can only hunt (unless u want stat rings), so get skill rings, according to the skills u got, the new ones are easier to get such as attune and ice blast, the older ones are harder but worth it
charm, im not sure what charm u can get, since they come from the best bosses, but u can always try and look for stats one / ice shards or firebolt dmg ones
neck, only buyable ones are useful, rest is crap

and thats pretty much everything u can equip, so gl

If he is on android his options may be a bit more limited for a while. Not all the areas have been released on android yet, correct? So, he won't be able to get aggy grims or dl for a while.
