Is there a good shield build for mages or should I just not waste my time and buy a focus of the mystic from the shop?

I know there are good mages who use a shield so i dont think its wasting ur time, but i dont know if it has any different build or not.

There isn't really a different build for use with a shield. (At least not that I've ever used) people generally use them to level on trolls, or solo level, or to solo lower bosses. If you solo level I would recommend using it. Tbh I wouldtn recommend solo lvling though.

My 190 mage currently wears a hrung Armour brace and I use shield of baston in dragon lord boss fights eg sreng snorri where I take little to no damage but I wouldn't recommend it unless you want to solo trolls.

I am a mage and I use the shield of rampart.....Its very good for if you were to solo level (like I do)

This is the first game I have seen with a mage in it that requires a shield in order to level. Something has to be wrong...

the reason why some mages use skill is because it help with the armor and resist.

Theres no different build per say, maybe just less vit because of the vit and hp bonuses a good shield gives. Main hand should be a book of some sort and e-shield is still worth having if u are leveling. Id get a focus when u can as well just for bosses or when u are in a support role. An ammy with a barrier skill helps tons in leveling too since the barrier is instant and gives you time to cast e-shield or cloak or boost.

I didn't have to use a shield to level necessarily, but I did some. It helped out quite a bit for troll groups in the mordy pit, and also when I soloed 187-190 on wyrms (I was sick of not being 190 yet). I ended up getting rid of mine but it definitely comes in handy when soloing lower bosses and also if you feel like doing some PVP.
