Its due to the rising processing demand and the increase of quality in games; especially with the fact they're releasing console games for iOS. Bioshock just got released for iOS he other day. Imagine trying to play titanfall full spec on a windows98 computer...

The 2 files below show the crazy curve of how much things change quickly. The iPhone 4 can barely run ios7, ios8 would slaughter it. It's not so much as them making their old devices useless, they make the new ones so much better that only a financially unstable person would opt for the lowest tier one.... Which, however, usually still doesn't happen

I disagree somewhat with the iOS updates. The fact apple tries to make it impossible to downgrade and essentially tries to force all devices to update bloats them unnecessarily. I don't want or need Siri on my iphone 4 (or any other features) so why should I want the slower performance that comes with it? Apple is more restrictive about this to do exactly as the op said (in my opinion) but dresses it up as "needed for security and the best user experience".

I've found the best performance is often from the oldest or nearly oldest iOS compatible with the software in question.

As i searched for the release date, numerous websites said to wait before people who have have given feedback about it. Knowing the problems I have encountered with the previous updates, I would heed their warnings.
