I was born "tongue tied"
Basically the lingual frenulum (the tissue that extends from the floor of your mouth to the underside of your tongue) shortened the length of my tongue and I was unable to even stick it out to poke my tongue at people more than a few millimetres
Eventually a few years ago when I was 15 I got a lingual frenectomy (the removal of this tissue under my tongue) because I eventually found out my way of eating a drinking things like a normal person had been affected due to my being tongue tied. After 500 AU$ and half an hour of the sensation of metal digging out bits of my mouth along with laser burning away my tissue, followed by a few weeks of excruciating pain in my mouth (I tore out a few stitches under my tongue trying to eat food I wasn't supposed to) I now had a normal, longer tongue!
Even today I'm still developing the ability to poke my tongue upwards in hopes of one day touching my nose, as my tongue had been unable to do anything other than be pulled downward for 15 years... and eating a drinking still feels unusual and... free.
Totally worth it though.
