@morg when did that change? My dad went to uni free in north ireland

@solum not talking dictatorship. I believe it is the responsibility of the govt to take care of the people. That it is on society to make sure all people have education, healthcare, and equal opportunity.

Kind of off on a tangeant but i believe big corporations need to be made more responsible and taxed more. Small independant business should be taxed less in order to encourage growth within a coubtry to avoid reliance on other countries
I know we aren't talking dictatorship. It is socialism we are talking about. In the past it was the duty of the community(or the church) to take care of those in need. If we weren't so dependent on the government, it might get back to that, which is a much better system. Also, if the government stopped supporting us, it would encourage more people to get jobs(people who could get jobs, but just choose not to). It might also stop the flood of illegal immigrents. I do agree that there should be less taxes. That is very true as the current system destroys new businesses. However, I don't agree the big corporations should be taxed more. Think about it. Bill Gates worked hard for his money. Just because he worked hard to get a lot of money doesn't mean he should be taxed more than the average person.

University used to be free in the UK until 1998, where the cost was raised to £1,000 per year, although 1/3 of students still received free education.

In 2005, almost all universities raised fees to £3,000 per year.

They are now £9,000 per year maximum. Unfortunately I'm going to be in a lot of debt. :(

Scotland's universities remain free for its nationals, however!

About 3-4 years ago I believe. The goverment decided to take away free education and instead students elsewhere get into a lot of debts.

That said, students from less well off families still get extra help towards paying their fees.

Are eyeglasses/dental/healthcare still covered by the govt?

XD Thanks for clearing this up! Since I'm from Scotland I wasn't aware just how it changed just that it did and that a lot of the student unions kicked up a big fuss about it all when it was raised to £9,000.

@pigman in Scotland yes. I think elsewhere you have to pay for certain services if you earn enough?

@solum
Minimum wage needs increased, also most unemployed people dont choose to be unemployed
Increasing minimum wage hurts small businesses. Big coorporations will raise prices.

Yes, but it doesn't exactly encourage people to get jobs when government services pay you more than minimum wage.

We have the NHS where the taxpayer pays for healthcare, however we have had reform after reform and it's all up in the air at the moment! :)

You can opt for private healthcare. While eye checks, for example, are free on the NHS, you have to pay for things like a new frame that isn't on the NHS etc.

Also, in my experience people are against universal healthcare if they are wealthy enough to afford it or have never been in the position of needing healthcare you cannot afford. In my opinion it is the responsibility of society to take care of those who cant afford or are unable to care for themselves
But people such as a lot of Americans (dont worry in American) just don't like the way of being forced. You got no idea how much I hate hearing my parents complain about being forced to pay for others healthcare, and as much as I'd like to admit I'm wrong, they are right. Except for the fact that most of the time they don't do it at will anyway and should, but it shouldn't be forced.

I suppose its all in the mentality of the nation. As a canadian i feel responsible for the well being of my entire nation. It also means healthcare costs me less than private would
