My thought on why you have to be online even in single player is to prevent duping/hacking. That way they can verify everything before and/or after you leave the game. Many of the dupe methods were much easier in offline single player where you can influence the code and exploit loopholes easier. Online verification will make this much harder.

but hacking had happened even for Blizzard which is a really good with their games (imo only). some player battle.net accts accounts been hacked into. not sure if it's the server itself that was hacked into or it could be the player's fault. i just use an authenticator. oh, and not click on any mysterious and tempting offers in emails, and not going to undesirable internet sites..
