So you call me a bigot for saying atheists are not held to a moral standard other than the law but you are saying that they are not held to a moral standard? I am not trying to be snobbish or arrogant (you are assigning tones), I am trying to understand your reasoning.True and false both. True in that there is no moral authority from divine origin that holds people accountable. False in that this is the morality that everyone (including Christians) use to judge people as moral.
Your tone in the original post snobby and arrogant.
Re: A discussion about religion
#792What if someone straps a bomb to you and orders you to do it or die and you don't?So you can go into a church and commit mass murder but if you love god he will save you? Catholics believe you must be forgiven for example. Christians believe it is up to god to judge - getting a day in court requires this 'love' but does not guarantee a not guilty verdict.Christians don't believe they will go to hell if they don't do the things they do, you have it all wrong:
"For by grace are you saved, through faith. And that, not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, NOT BY WORKS, lest any man should boast." Ephesians 2:8-9
They do good things because they want to help people and they think that is what pleases God.
You are assigning motives. If you read enough into any action and assign motives to it you can make the most wonderful things look like horrid atrocities, and the most horrid things look perfectly fine. Humans are so easy to manipulate.
On another note, I do not understand why someone's motives for doing something is relevant to you, results should be more important to an atheist. There is no afterlife for you to be punished for doing things for the wrong reason so all that matters is that you do the right thing, not why you do it.
The reason it is important is because I keep hearing how Christians delivered morality to the world. They claim to be the most altruistic. But to me if someone straps a remote controlled bomb to you and orders you to do it or die it's not altruism.
Re: A discussion about religion
#793Well, that depends, I would encourage you ask to one of the Christians posting on this thread, but here is my understanding: if you go to a church and commit a mass murder your heart is not right and you cannot go to heaven the way your heart is now. But if you have a change of heart, repent, and are genuinely sorry for what you did and try to change your life, God will forgive you. As long as you are alive you have another chance. Christianity emphasizes the heart's condition (heart being figurative), it is all about why you do things, no matter how much you mess up, God will give you another chance and will always forgive you.So you can go into a church and commit mass murder but if you love god he will save you? Catholics believe you must be forgiven for example. Christians believe it is up to god to judge - getting a day in court requires this 'love' but does not guarantee a not guilty verdict.

#794Yep god will forgive you if he chooses to do so. That was my point. #795Then it is still not altruism as you are not helping people for no personal gain. What if someone straps a bomb to you and orders you to do it or die and you don't?

I am making the point that even Christians do not get their morality from the bible. They get it from the parts of the brain evolved to help people think morally as well as a zeitgeist that most of the world seems to share which is not constrained much by religious or political boundaries. This is obvious as the majority of Christian people reject the bible where it conflicts with this and cherry pick out the parts that agree.
That is the standard by which all are judged regardless of faith.

#798I'm simply a atheist because i acknowledge the fact that I don't know and that nobody actually knows.
You all gotta problem with that? You actually believes i will be tortured for 500 trillion years + eternity?
Who but a sick physcopath wants Christianity or the countless other religons to be true.
Look up the definition of faith.
