I cook and my hands cramp up all the time from knife work.
What I do is alternate really cold and really hot water and it frees up your circulation and deadens the cramps.
In terms of your thumbs, and any fingers:
1) just fill up a small container with really cold even ice water in a sink
2) then run hot water from the faucet with the faucet running to the side of it.
3) Dunk your hand in the cold, and flex your thumbs using your other hand to safely bend it back and forth.
4) then take it out shake it and run the same actions of bending under the hot water. This may be slightly uncomfortable, especially the cold water..
5) keep doing this for about 15 sec per water type for like 2 min (or 8 dunks, 4 each water)
Then rest a bit and the cramps will vanish
