Your Thoughts on Inter-World Programming

Yeah, that is an awkward title.
Anyway, I started this thread because I was discussing with a clansman (Guffy on Danu) about incorporating inter-world features like auction house, mini-games, PvP, and etc. He made a good point - something I had never thought of before. He was explaining that incorporating this would be difficult without a complete overhaul, unless the developers had planned on programming this in from the beginning. Now, I know the concept of programming, but nothing specific. Perhaps some of you programmer savvy people can give a better opinion then me on this topic, but I thought it was really something interesting to think about, and whether inter-world activity will even be possible.
More over, Guffy brought up something else. Perhaps the auction house would incorporate a simpler form that doesn't require inter-world programmer, and it would cause one item to be deleted from the player (the one who sold item x on auction house) and that item would be spawned in the other player's inventory on the other world (the one who bought item x on the auction house). However, this would render mini-games and the such completely useless.
Now, I basically used Guffy's opinion for this thread, because I know very little about programming.. But it does appear that you would have to overhaul the system if each world runs on its own, and you want to change it so that worlds can interact in such a way that players could fight each other, trade, auction house, and etc.
What do you guys think about this? Also, I would like to hear from admin any plans on doing this. Although its been mentioned and brought up before, I never heard any responses regarding this particular topic. Do you guys think it would be possible, or would the developers have to re-program the entire system?
