Ranger Query/Dilemma?

#1
Howdy,

I have been playing CH and perusing these boards for a few days now trying to remedy my issues. I have a lvl 20 ranger stuck in the Dustwither catacombs, and I have some questions for you seasoned vets. I am thinking i need to reallocate my stats as well as my skills to be a better ranger. I am leaning towards the Dex build for the redesign. I splurged and got the war bow, but my main question is how does everyone attain so much gold/platinum? I only had a little over 1k before I bought the bow. How do you make money when you can sell a plate helm for 4 gold? Gotta get me some of them luxury items to help my toon out. I only play an hour a day so the extra boosts would be nice. Also, for the life of me I can not find Louren the Bow trainer. Since i will need her after my respec. I believe she is in Hilshire Village, but I can not seem to find her....noob i know, but gotta love online anonymity, eh?

Anyways..thanks for your time.

I see. lvl 20+catas is a good sign that you've got a head on your shoulders. I wouldn't mind knowing what exactly your stats/skills are now but ill give you answers nonetheless.

Dex build is great for survival but does need energy. theres 2 ways you can do it- 0.3.0.2 or 1.2.0.2 Str.dex.focus.vit

I would advise (as a higher level) going with the first option, as using it will mean that at a certain point for 30+ levels mobs will not be able to auto attack you, plus the fact that this build is great for survival and awesome skills. the downside is your auto sucks- insofar as compared to other people your level, until you level up to about 60 will you start seeing your auto as a decisive part of your dps (damage per second). This is the build I keep finding myself dragged back to whenever I stray from it (after about 10-20 levels).

The second option gives you a nice amount of dex while still giving you a nice amount of strength (which means a decent auto). Your survivability is lessened, your skills aren't as great, but you can still give it and take it pretty well.

The reason both builds, actually most builds for all classes, include 2 vit is because it is necessary to have that much of an increase per level- especially if you plan on 'tanking' or just going face to face with mobs your fighting. Heres a quick run through of what each stat does for you:

Strength (str)- for each point in it- adds one point of attack (chance to hit) and multiplies pierce (crush/slash too) dmg to get your own total dmg that will affect your auto attack.
Dexterity (dex)- for each point in it- adds one point of attack and 2 points of defense (chance to avoid anothers auto attack whether mob or player)
Focus (no real shortcut, but foc)- for each point in it- adds to your total energy (needed in order to cast skills/spells)- weight will lessen the effectiveness of focus
Vitality (vit)- for each point in it- adds to your total health by x amount (people have calculated the exact amount of health that one point of vit adds and I believe it was something like 13.5 health)

Alright so now that you understand a little more ( I hope) I will answer your other questions.

As far as skills go, it depends on your fighting style/technique. A straightforward dps build (FOR DEX BUILDS) would look like this:

Sharp Shot (ss)-maxed
Long shot (ls)-maxed (you would need to buy this skill or get it yourself at level 70+)
Light heal (lh)-maxed
Sharpen/Steady aim- maxed Some prefer one over the other- sharpen adds dmg (a lot) and steady adds dmg ( a bit) and attack (for you you can buy steady at the castle from the skill vendor- id use it then decide what you like)
Double shot- at one (unless you’re a str build your better off keeping this skill at 1, as it doesn’t improve much if you’re a dex build and have points in it) (again youd need to buy this skill too, same for sharpen)

This is what I personally use (I use sharpen btw), and I tank through my mobs/bosses. This is a 'tanking' dps skill set- mainly because it doesn’t include the use of bolas. This is a dex skill set example using bolas:

Bolas- have it so that you can bolas mobs up to 10 levels of your own level (if your level 20, you would have it working on level 30)
Ss- maxed
Ls- maxed
Lh- maxed
Extra points in steady/sharpen
Double shot- at one

Bolas uses a lot of energy, so be careful with using it if you decide to. And a word of warning on Bolas, they normally still allow your opponent (especially bosses) to cast skills at will onto you with or without bolas being on them.

I almost forgot I am trying to give advice to a lower level who doesn’t have the resources to buy or get longshot, sharpen, or double shot unless its through a stroke of luck. I would suggest using these skills:

Sharp shot- maxed
Light heal- at whatever you need it (as long as it heals 50-80 health you will be fine for awhile- til you hit level 35-40)
Steady aim- maxed (its 100 gold in shop but its worth it maxed believe me)
Meditate- 7 points in it will take care of your energy nicely
Barbed shot- all the extra points
Rapid shot- at one (its mostly a useless skill but can be useful at times-really hard mobs 3-4*s)
(if you decide to use bolas replace barbed shot and put some ss points in bolas- and cast bolas before anything else)

These skills you get at or before level 15 so you should be able to do them just fine. Also a recommendation on how to attack a mob- barbed, sharp auto auto sharp… I would try to find double shot and/or longshot (longshot is more expensive but really worth it) while your online. Also join a good clan on your world, they might be able to help you get a skill or two, in addition to training partners.

Ah, the problem of gold… (plat is bought through real life $$$$) basically when your backpack is full go to a trader and sell all the junk that you have picked up while training/doing stuff. At low levels, the most efficient way to earn gold is to train (and know what to spend your money on when you have it). The warbow was a good buy. Buy the ancient longbow next- they normally sell (in my world anyway) for about 2k if you can get it off a player. Also, buying low and selling high, getting rare or wanted stuff and selling it to other players is a good option too. If you decide to farm (for gold) try to wait until your level 70+. Until then the best gold 100% is to just train like nutz (and even for a little bit after that…).

For lux items I would recommend a ring of energy regen (cant equip til level 50 and its norm about 16-18k bought from somebody), then either a (either golden rejuv from castle or an ow lux quiver) quiver, heroic ammy, or heroic gloves (being a dex build might want to get gloves second or third, after you get the ring).

I am not 100% sure who your talking about, as its been awhile, but Ill give you both locations and let you find out where Loren is.

1) Rapid shot trainer- if your facing the castle leystone she is on your right.
2) Ranger skill shop- exit the courtyard and keep going straight- should run right into a ranger standing there.

Alright. Wow this is a lot. Anyway, don’t feel afraid to ask any questions you’ve got on rangers!
