Assuming this ranger toon is just starting out from scratch I would say use your 5 points per level in this way for a pretty basic strength build-
-strength 2
-dex 1
-focus 1
-vitality 1
Stay with this formula until your dex, focus, and vitality are around 45, this will give you enough dex to wear ancient leather, enough health and mana to survive most encounters. After that you can dump all 5 into strength which is your damage dealing stat, if you find that your dying, alternate on each level 5 strength, 5 vitality.
As you level up and get better gear you might want to reset all of your points and use your gear to supplement various stats allowing you put additional points into strength or dex or whatever you feel fits your playstyle. Also as early as possible try to do all 5 of the statue evasion ability quests so you can get all 5 evasion abilities to start leveling early on. These will help with your over all survival.
