New Ranger

#1
Hi!
I made a ranger now and he's level 26.
These are his stats:
45
55
15
35

He has a Heroic Rejuv, Heroic Haste gloves, Ancient war bow, Quiver of Farsight, Tanned highroad greaves, Ancient lamellar helm, bp and boots.
I've heard that I should max my Sharp Shot, Rapid Shot, Steady aim (when I get it) and Bolas. And also Light Heal.
Is that right? What about Barbed Shot?

I've seen that there is a strength build and a dex build.
What's the best?
When my ranger is high enough, I think I'll switch him, if he isn't, into a strength DPS build.

In terms of gear what should I save for?
I'm really poor now, gotta save

L57 Ranger, with no lux so take this with how ever many dashes of salt you want :)

160 Str, 70 Dex and 70 Vit with a Moon mask that +100 Health +100 Energy.

Steady Aim - check the vendor; this should be available to you at L26 (I think I got mine at L17?)

I'm basically a Str based Ranger, and still not sure why I keep upping my Dex past 40 (to gear up Anc War Bow and Highroad armor) LOL but there it is. Between Rapid + Bolas, individually or combined (depending on level/star of mob), I'm not really missing Sharp that much, tho I do use it (usually with Bolas, sans Rapid). At full length of bolas, I can do 2 Sharp shots, with a Lot of Auto in between. So unless this is different for you with your gloves, you may want to up that Str some more (Dex doesn't do anything for our Auto, I think).

Barbed... pretty much every one I've talked to doesn't like it (or at least, not enough to put points into it over other skills). From my personal experience, it simply doesn't do enough dmg, and the ticks doesn't interrupt (would be nice for mage type mobs).

With all the extra dps, dont bother with sharp shot unless ya really want to, i have ancient war bow and it makes a huge damage difference. Regular shots would do more than maxed sharp, if i remember right...never actually tried making sharp 15/15, I dont have the money for book of alt

Dex affects attack , of course it is important for auto. Also dex makes light heal , sharp , steady , barbed and spikes better.

Tho I agree, I'm still not sure how Much Dex does affect those things, vis a vis other factors.

Attacks - yes, Dex does inc our attacks. But to the extent that it's better than adding Str (up to a point I guess, due to diminishing return)? Even at my low levels (and low dex) I hardly miss, unless I'm right in front of the mob which seems to make them evade/parry more...

Light Heals, Sharp, Steady, Etc - Dex' effect, versus the skill points towards these, again, I do not know to what extent Dex does affect them. As you yourself pointed out in my other thread, your 450 Dex And 35/35 in Steady gives you "65 damage and 319 attack".

I still haven't found a way to play with a L150 and a bunch of books lol, so can't tell you how much of your Dex gave those numbers (and no one else seems to, either).

My friend has made an alt as a ranger.
In like less than two weeks he's level 80. No elixirs. He also didn't use help from his char. It was completely new. All gear and money earned on that char.
It's insane. He says he loves playing the ranger class and he recommends me using a dex build, upping my dex from here on in.
I have
65 strength now.
55 Dex
20 Focus
40 Vit.

So upping dex...?
Also I agree with the Barbed shot damage being insufficient.

Well, 80 in two weeks May be possible ( my highest is 62 lol so I wouldn't know) but it Probably involves a lot of hours in those two weeks; like 8 - 10 Per Day? Esp once you get to SV lol.

You may want to ask him Why he recommends a Dex build, and how he does his fights in general (like what skills, etc). All I can add to my post above is that @ 62, I have something like 185/70/10/70 and with an Anc War Bow, my 10/20 Sharp Shot does as much dmg as my Auto attacks (which is Great considering, but with the cooldown, still means about 1 out of 5 arrows are Sharp with the rest being auto attacks). My Barbed is 1/20 lol.

Sorry. My bad it was 3 weeks not 2
He says he likes the Dex build because it's working. He did it on his rogue on lower levels and he did it on his ranger. He has somethin like 300+ dex and 50+ str and he says he likes it because it works. And he can heal good, and hit hard.

Well, I'd be curious to hear what his hits are; skill hits like Sharp Shot, and Auto-Dps hits. He probably has High Sharp shots from all that Dex. And his heals will also be high as Light heal is dex based as well.
