Defensive Spikes vs. Barbed Shot

hi all,
i am considering a major 'alteration' and am thinking about putting a good 30 points into either barbed shot or defensive spikes. Here is my question - what kind of typical damage can i expect (i dont want to alter twice to find out). So if you are someone who has put 20-30 points into one of these skills, please let me know the dmg you see at a typical mob (like eye or tree). thanks!

Depends if mob is weak to pierce .
Just to ballpark it , figure spikes will do 50 per attack minimum .

Spikes also last longer than shot and can be used in group. That means you will do more damage in the long run.

Another consideration is whether you frequently group with rogues who use rend. Currently there is a bug whereby rend and barbed shot don't stack.

though it may not be very 'rangerish', i tend to do one bolas and rapid - then finish off the mob in melee range (using a large light heal to keep me going). i am thinking defensive spike might be the way to go - place it on just as they get in range. Also, if it really works like cloak, the more attacks they do, the more damage they take (unlike barbed which will only be about 3 rounds of dmg).
thanks

Reverse the process to maximize damage . Spikes with bolas on mob then back off to heal or recast spikes as needed.

Well, considering I have Maybe 1/10th the XP you have (L85 vs your L130 lol).... but that sounds like a waste of skill points? If you're already into bolas+rapid (so am I), wouldn't just re-relocating to a different spot (possible after another bolas) do the same thing?

In case you miss it, you may want to look at this too; someone just posted some Def Spike #s from L130s.

im currently 137 and im dex type ranger with 560 dex with gear 100 str 10 focus and 150 vit, i only use bolas on boses (up to lvl110 and have royal ring in case i need for lvl 110+ boss) i have grand ring of spikes (34/30) and this really helps me in lava fields cuz its quicker to kill than using bolas, i only get hit bout 2 every 6 attacks so i dont have to heal every kill and my spikes does 90 dmg maximum, and yes spikes does a lot of damage than barbed especially when fighting main bosses that have higher attacks speed. and spikes cannot be resisted unlike barbed.
