Mage is one of the worst dps classes. Starting off as a ranger would be much better. Cheap to level and easy to gear. Plus they're the best dps class in game anyways

Rogue is best dps class, u can easily make a good amount of money when starting out just by doing bounties n lvling,
Enuf to afford a heroic Amy.
I'd like to say it's not impossible to be one of the best without plat, yes u may not have many mounts or fashion but it's the character what matters, bossing with clan is the key.
Don't buy shadow strike, farm it!
The game provides u with everything u need just by bossing, by the time u are endgame u will know what to do.
It's all about patience since in this game you can't be the best alone.
Rogue is highest damage in short burst, Mage has Heavy Damage but slower and squisher.
I suggest u trying all characters before choosing a main lvl 40-50 ull get a hang of it.
Ofc the money u make while testing toons u can mail it to the one you choose to play at the end.

All characters have good dps endgame, except for Druids since they r most expected to be a support than dps endgame.
It depends upon the build and gears you have.
I have heard of Druids getting kills over rogues mages na rangers on hrung, one of the mid game bosses, not tAt I have seen it myself tho

Do the free plat offers, should be able to get at least 50 a week. Get a chest with it and sell it for 20k easy. Do bounties and gladiators every day. Try and max out on bounties, you can make a couple thousand a day on this as well as decent xp (and tokens). When you get to level 70-80 level on the giant lizards in the sewer, they drop decent gold and also frequently drop rings and tomes (shadowstrike is what you want most! Dont buy this, farm it here). Don't invest in armor from shops, the game has quests that give you armor and your alliance can help you get the items. However, weapons usually are an ok investment.
The first thing you should try to buy is a heroic amulet, it goes for around 150k second-hand. Then save for an offhand.

Rely on your clan and farming for jewelry other than the hero ammy. The otherworld has very good bracelet quests that can get you up to 100 stat braces if you work hard enough, and rings you farm can be up to +5

Stat wise, you are going to want enough vit to be comfortable, then the rest in to str/dex at a 1:2 ratio respectively.

My old druid had several hrung kills. Even with the best gear in game mages are crap endgame dps

Ranger is a great starting class good dps, bolas and light heal can help you so you don't have to spend gold on hp lixes or restos.
