I lvled most of my 150 to 180 with a Bone spear and a Void trident, but have also lvled with my frozen, the bone daggers, knuckle blades, and bone knuckles. And honestly i had the most fun, and best results with certain mobs when using a spear for solo lvling. It wasn't until i got my DL dagger where i found my spears weren't as good. I love spearing and will go back to it when i get a mordris spear.
I would have agreed with Spearing isn't worth lvling when it was Update 3 , but in Update 4 spearing is very effective for lvling. But you can't just auto, and you can't just spam skills... there is a way to maximize your damage with a spear. Read the guide in the sticky page if youre interested.
BTW i would use a flint/opal/adament spear before using a 2 handed spear like grim/askold/ymir spear for lvling.
Missing an offhand is a huge set back with 2 handed weapons.
