Quest tracking?

Hi there!
Enjoying the new experience so far but can't quite figure out one thing..
I have several quests in my quest log/window:
The circle around the base of your character on the floor always seems to track the same quest, point in the same direction, even if I select all quests:
Can and if so how do you select what quest is being "tracked" (as in circle around the base of your character points in the direction of that quest objective)?
Secondly; What is the function of those green check marks as seen in the second screenshot?
Have everything checked vs. unchecked doesn't seem to cause any change and or I don't see the difference...
