how do i register my e-mail for in-game support?

it wont let me register from the log in screen

Hi there,
To register an e-mail address you need to head to the Character Select screen.
If you select 'Log In' from the Main Menu, you will be taken to the Character Select screen. From there, tap the icon that looks like 2 gears, and you will be able to register your e-mail.

I'm just trying to create an account for the first time to check out the game. I create account, takes me to world select, then says password or username incorrect. Never get to a 'character select' screen or ' gears icon' to register an email address. Pretty nice catch 22, think I'll check out another game.
