For those who haven't read belerophon is the ranger Will's old horse, Tug's new name.

I first heard of Bellerophon from Greek Mythology, he was the one that killed the chimera and rode Pegasus.
I reckon the writer was inspired by the name from the Greek myths, although that name had 2 Ls, same as in Ranger's Apprentice.
