Hunt at the right level (& make your server a better place)

#1
I'm very confused by the behavior on our server when it comes to the level mobs people are killing. It seems pretty clear to me that your best experience/time is to hunt at your level up through a few levels above. To support that, here's the max experience for Ashborn Saplings:
  • Level 100 - 1980
  • Level 101 - 2000
  • Level 102 - 2120
  • Level 103 - 2140
  • Level 104 - 2160
To get the max experience you need to be at or below the level of the mob. If you're higher level you get much less experience and it gets worse as the gap grows. For example, a level 102 toon killing the above saplings will get the following:
  • Level 100 - 1170 (59%)
  • Level 101 - 1575 (79%)
  • Level 102 - 2120 (100%)
  • Level 103 - 2140 (100%)
  • Level 104 - 2160 (100%)
If you're hunting much below your level, you're giving up a ton of experience. It might be a little faster but you're not killing mobs 2 levels lower at twice the speed of those at your level. As the gap grows the math gets even worse. Unfortunately, in addition to wasting your own time, you're probably wasting the time of the toons in the right level range for the mob you're killing. With the eyes it's not a huge deal since there are so many. Many of the harder mobs come only 1-2 per level, though, and often with a slow spawn, so a single toon can handle their level up through +1 or +2.

Given this, why do I see people so routinely wasting mobs 4-5 levels below them? When I ask I get answers like "I kill whatever I see" or "I'm getting good exp". The former is selfish/juvenile and the latter is just plain wrong.

Leveling much above your level doesn't make sense either. As shown above, the extra experience for higher level mobs is minimal - <1% per level for saplings. Hunting 10 levels above yours (which often requires the help of a druid or long recovery times) is a waste (they're going to be more than 1% harder per level) unless OW is packed in your level range and you're stuck. Odds are, you're just screwing people in the right level range who then have to go up or down to find mobs.

To summarize, even if your goal is to be selfish, be selfish. The best way to do so is to hunt at your own level up through the next few to get the most experience. Try not to be bothered by the fact that by doing so, you're inadvertently making life on the server better for others as well.

what you're not considering is the gold. It can be much more efficient to farm gold way below your level.
That's not levelling up? No one farms gold on mobs that are 100+

I agree pad. On wyverns at level 144, I get just over 1k xp on the level 140s. That is less than 25% xp, of what a level 140 would get from it.
Their is absolutely no point in killing things 2 or more levels lower than yourself. As for killing things that are 10+ levels higher - that is a waste too, and certainly not time efficient.

BIG numbers. Or the appearance of big numbers. Some would rather see 5k every kill that takes them 1 minute to do than 1k every 10 seconds.

One thing tho, depending on some factors, loosing 20% on killing. -1 mob, may not be inefficient if it takes you 50% faster to do so vs a same level mob. Since it is coded that we hit lower level mobs harder while they hit us weaker, the numbers may not too bad.

From this data, You gain an extra 20 xp if a mob is 1 level higher than one you should be taking. And their is next to no difference, in killing something that is 1 level above your own, and 1 level below your own

Rapid, can you re-phrase that? Not sure I understood you properly.

Also, maybe something OTM can look into, but it seems kind ludicrous that mob xp progression is only 20 XP even up to L100 (and far beyond?).

From a different thread, here's some other numbers

L61 - 1300
L62 - 1320 xp
L66 - 1400 xp

In fact, extrapolating from that, it looks like Paddle's L100 may eve have short changed him a bit, by 100 XP

say you are level 100.
You kill a level 100 tree that gives you 1000xp.
You then kill a 101 tree that gives 1020xp, with not much difference in time taken to kill.
You then kill a 102 tree that gives 1040xp, which takes a little longer to kill, But still not too bad.
From this point on going up in levels, the mobs get harder to kill, and the extra xp reward is not worth the extra time taken.

Meaning their is no point in taking mobs 5-10levels higher than your own, if their are ones available that are your level or 1 or 2 levels higher :)

Also.

Killing things 1-2 levels lower than your own, still gives reasonable Xp, but it is still a waste of time, when theirs other mobs your level or above that are free to take. As soon as you get 3 levels above a mob, taking it is simply a waste of time, per xp gained :)

Ah, gotcha. Agreed.

It's kinda depressing to find out that uber dude L110 gets just 1000 more xp per kill than me at L60...
