Given this, why do I see people so routinely wasting mobs 4-5 levels below them? When I ask I get answers like "I kill whatever I see" or "I'm getting good exp". The former is selfish/juvenile and the latter is just plain wrong.
Leveling much above your level doesn't make sense either. As shown above, the extra experience for higher level mobs is minimal - <1% per level for saplings. Hunting 10 levels above yours (which often requires the help of a druid or long recovery times) is a waste (they're going to be more than 1% harder per level) unless OW is packed in your level range and you're stuck. Odds are, you're just screwing people in the right level range who then have to go up or down to find mobs.
To summarize, even if your goal is to be selfish, be selfish. The best way to do so is to hunt at your own level up through the next few to get the most experience. Try not to be bothered by the fact that by doing so, you're inadvertently making life on the server better for others as well.
