The majority of Americans only have two concerns in life, ESPN and American Idol. So understanding politics is very low on their priority list. Obamas programs are very attractive because they remove individuals from being responsible for their own decisions. Why should I go to all the effort to learn about all the different health care programs when somebody an do it for me. And let the rich pay for it, they have the money. It is an attractive sales pitch. The question is, can we afford it? If you could only vote if you had a zero credit apple balance then Romney would win by a landslide. But most people don't understand money and interest. Female voters will decide the election, if they go shopping or buy gas before they vote then they will see what inflation is doing to the dollar and Romney will win. If they wait a few days then they will forget and Obama will win. John and Jane Q. Normals attention span is very short.

There was a pole of likely voters done last week in illinois (obamas home state) that showed Romney ahead. If that holds then the election is over. The debate last night was a draw. Now it's up to the ground game. This will be the test of "do you want to learn to fish" vs "do you want me to give you a fish".

I'm not sure if the BBC takes a certain political stance with regards to American parties. From what I've gathered, it seems a bit neck-to-neck at the moment. Romney has made a few mistakes during his visits to other countries, which may be at the back of some people's minds when voting. However, he seems to be fast on his feet and may make a good leader. On the other hand, he seems a bit like the type of person that you'd walk on thin ice with - he seems a bit like he's speaking a lot of hot air sometimes. It may just be me.

Obama has run the country for 4 years, and he has triumphed in some cases but is criticised in others. Will the American public give him a second chance - more time - to fulfil all his promises? I heard him say in the latest debate that he promised he'd look after every single family or something along those lines. Whatever he said, it didn't sound feasible to me. His speeches seemed pretty good when he became president, but he's getting a bit too repetitive for my liking. I think more Americans will agree with his policies, though.

I do think that back in 2008, many voters may have just selected him so he can be the first black president. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's my feeling. Personally, I expect this vote to be a close one, but Romney may just snatch it. I do not take either side when it comes to American politics, and I'm not even the age to be able to vote in the UK yet, but that's what I think.

P.S. Maybe this kind of current affairs discussion will be nice to make regular on these forums - not just politics, but general two-sided stories like this.

I hope romney will win. But as someone said there are too many people worrying about who will win the next sports game or tv contest. I only say Romney because Obamas past is down right scarry. Do a little research on your own he is a globalist trying to take down the American system and replace it with a central government (think of the UN) I am not saying that America should be isolated from the rest of the world, but for 225+ years we became the wealthiest and most technologically advanced society in that time. All of this was caused by castaways and people fleeing from religious persecution. I am proud of the American society and dream.

I think romney will win. I have more faith than ever with this election being watched closely by both parties. In the first day of early voting in North Carolina voter fraud has already been discovered. In the past that would have continued without being uncovered. In New Orleans after hurricane Katrina the voters registration was purged and current voters were verrified. Now the dead people will not be voting. I have a better feeling that this will be a much more honest election. Let's just hope is not close either way or people will find more ballot boxes in their trunks that mysteriously show up after the election. ie Minnesota senate race between Al Franken and Norm Coleman.

SL1c3, if that were the case why are we paying record prices for energy. We do not get any free oil from Iraq. We pay market price for our oil if we do get it. I have personally been to Afghanistan and the only viable resource there is opium I really don't think America wants more drugs in our country.
