Back to the original question, I often see low level Druids and Mages (under lvl 40) using swords and axes. Quite often they are also wearing low level Warrior armour.

I usually assume they are a Warrior until I see them launch a firebolt or lightning. I try to explain why they should be using something else... I usually get "STFU dude, this does more damage." Then they cast Meditate and stand there.

So the answer is yes that people do it. There is no ability for it, though, and all that steel means they probably run out of energy after a few spells.

If the torch uses an ability, I would assume it to be Blunt. That or the ever so rare Arson ability.

Arson?
It was a joke.

Arson is the act of intentionally burning things with the intent to cause damage. Occasionally there is a perverse desire to be seen as the hero.

New players, unless someone tells them, or they actually notice it, do not usually figure out that weight reduces energy. The obvious difference when they wear silk armor vs. scale or chain is that they get less damage, so they go with it.
As for mages using swords, I guess when you see a big hit once in a while, it seems better than seeing smaller frequent hits.

I agree, and I don't fault them for that at all. But after explaining why and I get STFU as a retort, well I just have to allow them to go on their merry way.
