True, the formula is for calculating base damage. The amount of damage done to your opponent will depend on your base damage and your opponent’s resistance to the type (s) of damage you deliver. For example, a Lure of Assassins increases your effective piercing damage by reducing your opponent’s resistance to pierce.
While I agree attack scores are important, your relative attack vs. your opponent’s defense score play a role in determining your chance to hit. (I believe you posted a nice data set showing the linear relationship between attack and defense scores as a function of your % chance to hit.) It is true that you can’t do any damage if you don’t land a hit, but attack doesn’t factor into base damage.
