I have not posted here in a long time but anyway,
I looked back at all the posts on this topic and do you know what I see?
I see an awesome community ("Community" and the community ^^ ). I have not seen another like this.
Always stay like this. You guys rock!
I don't know many communities willing to help a person with their problems.

Re: rant of a depressed person
#13Community is old enough to be our dads. Your parents are disappointed because they want to push you to be as smart as you can and to be successful in life. You don't have to reach everyone's expectations. You also don't have to listen to what people want you to do, listen to what you want to do. Set your own goals. You shouldn't be depressed but be proud of your accomplishments in life and school. Continue on with life and leave your regrets behind, don't keep a grudge or regrets.

Re: rant of a depressed person
#14Hi my friend,
I'm struggling with how to express this, but I think I understand what you are saying. There seem to be a couple of different issues. One is the issue of other people's expectations -- I cannot tell you how sick I got of hearing about my "potential" when I was a kid/teen. I too was expected to have a "prestigious" career and felt a lot of pressure around that. For a while in high school I deliberately let my grades suffer both to relieve some of that pressure and in hopes it might bump me out of the "smart/geeky" crowd and help me be more popular.
The reality is there are many many jobs which are essential to society but not given enough respect. Watch what happens when there is a garbage strike or transportation strike. And farmers??
Much respect to the people who feed us all -- highly under-respected. I have as much respect for the housekeepers in a hospital as I do for the doctors; keeping the environment as clean as possible may have more to do with patient outcomes overall than many other medical interventions.
All I can say about the expectations of others is that this is YOUR life. And as far as I know, it is the one shot you get. Yes, the opportunities can be a bit overwhelming -- it makes me think of how I feel in the prairies -- all that openness freaks me out. It's like the opposite of claustrophobia.
I think also that there can be a certain satisfaction and sense of accomplishment from having to work hard at something. Those who succeed easily may lack some of that and have a bit of....emptiness, disappointment (I bet there is a word for this in German lol, they seem to have words for all those kinds of concepts). I think it is a fairly common experience for smart, multi-talented folks.
Find something you love, something that interests you, challenges you. Joy is as much a marker of success as having some string of letters behind your name (this comes from someone with three undergrad degrees and a graduate degree). I get more satisfaction out of watching my children or pulling a perfect heirloom tomato out of my garden than I do from rattling off my professional credentials.

I didn't mean it for you to impress them , a game forum isn't the place to open up your soul , you have made some comments here that are very troubling , I honestly think it would be in your best interest to discuss this in the real world with an authority figure , if not your parents then maybe a guidance counselor or something .
Re: rant of a depressed person
#18ok sorry by "wouldnt be impressed" i meant the like "-_- unimpressed/dissapointed/ur an idiot " kinda "not impressed". They would absolutely not understand. If they were dissapointed that I got a few B's, how do you think they would react to this post? Some parents are great about listening to their kids, and having a good relationship. My parents are not those parents.@ keri, thanks, that made a lot of sense. btw, I grew up on a small farm in PA and will inherit it one daythat would actually be hilarious... go to harvard, get a PHD, then move back to PA and live the rest of my life as a hick farmer

Re: rant of a depressed person
#19I know exactly how you feel. I have an older brother who is 21 months older than me. He's 6'7, star of the basketball team, a 5.0 IB student, a musical prodigy (Been playin guitar since he was 5), super popular, incredibly nice, and I hate him for it. I'm in a few AP classes, and I get A's and B's. I hate sports of all kinds, I'm completely tone deaf, and shy and awkward around people. I've never met one person who hasn't asked me "Oh, do you play basketball too?" Or, "Do you take IB too?" His excellence in everything he does raises the bar extremely high for me, and it's upsetting. When I come home with my report apple, my parents always look at me with a look of disproval and say, "Why can't you study more like your brother?" And I do study. I try my hardest. But I'm not my brother. Life just isn't fair.
