Hi all,

Today one of my clansmate, someone we all appreciated had a very unappropriated joke in our clan chat : "Only jews would sell so cheap". Clearly not funny, clearly Racist.

The answer of our management was also unappropriated : it was a mess and resulted in the departure of Vlad, one of our valued friend and clansmate. Vlad as a guardian immedialtly tried to fire the clansmate, but was opposed by Thing and heli on the matter, as they thought his reaction was disproportionated compared to the fault commited.

This thread is to make clear my position has a chieftain, but also how i wished things should have been handled :

1 - First of all, I back up 100% Vlad :

Even if some of our clansmates are kidos and do not reallize that some words may offense other virtual players around the world : from different ages, cultures, backgrounds, religions... It does not change the fact that a non funny racist joke or comment, is something that cannot be tolerated and that cannot be left unpunished.

Once again, even if the player is a good friend, even if he did not realize the consequences of his words at the time he said them (typed them)... The player must understand the gravity of his words : A time out clan is indeed a good option to take, so that the clansmate do understand that he must be careful in the future, and keep his personal opinion about religion, politics and cultures outside CH, and more precisely outside of my clan.

2 - How handle such a punitive answer : In that case, as a guardian, vlad should have explained that he found this comment insulting and racist in the clan chat, and that he wanted him out of clan time the whole management to statute on his case. Then fire him, but not just directly without any explanation in the clan chat, when other guardians and even a gen was present.

Heli and Thing : They also acted wrongly. They should have backed up vlad, then maybe explain to all the core crew, why they thought this was just a not funny joke, but comming from someone not really realising what he said.

But in no case, guardians, generals should fight together in the clan chat.

Right now, i did fired the clansmate to show to vlad that i do agree about his decision, but simply differ on how it has been to dealt. I also stress on the fact that clansmates are not a representative of a whole clan.

Secondly, I invite all my core crew to discuss this story and settle it asap : waiting on your comments and point of views.

Shadow, i had nothing to do with this situation, i logged as Vlad was leaving, then tried to group and wisper Vlad to find out what had happened, he then kept leaving and rejecting then began to defriend me and i think block. I only was trying to help figure out the situation and help Vlad, but now seem to be the bad guy. I admit i had been a bit persistent to Vlad in trying to find out what happened and i apologies for that but besides that no reason to be unfriended.

I agree with Shad on this. Rascism should not be tolerated in any way. However, I do feel that this can all be resolved peacefully and to the best interest of all involved. I am on board for meeting with gens and chief to discuss.

Vlad; I want to apologize to you from Berserkers. I know this is not the appropriate apology, but just to let you know that I do not agree with ANY racist comments.

As to the person who made the comment. I also understand that you may have intended no harm with your comment, but also you need to know that in many parts of the world, what you said has serious implications.

People playing virtual games must realize, no matter their age, that there are numerous races, ages and religions (I''m staying out of politics!) playing the game as well and should be aware, if not sensitive to other people's feelings and/or beliefs. I am not a "young" player, so i have a lot of real life lessons to draw from. However, I find that some comments are still hurtful and the way i deal is to block the player. I found Vlad to be a very nice person, and hope we can mend the break, because one comment made, even if it were unintentionally made, was and is not the way our clan believes. I support Shadow's decision and apologize for the comment made in clan chat.

Ive found unless you know someone well and know that they don't take offence to certain statements you should avoid any and all racist, religious and sexist comments. These three topics are the topics that can cause the most problems. Also and i have also done wrong in this topic, be careful when referring to queers, you don't know how anyone will react.

But also from the other side a calm approach asking for them not to use these terms or even calmly explaining the problem you have with this would help situations.

Now i wasn't there in this case so i cannot judge on anything that happened but if what i hear is true an apology is needed.

In the event someone is punished and bails on clan only to join another or should be banned from bosses, you have -exultantis- support. Feel free to pass a message on to: Chief: virulent Gens: Randall, Magicm, Callator, Mizzblackhands. I hope this is a one time issue and we don't have to get to this point in-game. Cheers.

That was a strong reaction to what was probably meant as an innocent joke.

Here's my opinion:

My advice in any such situation would not be to exclude the offender, but to inform him/her that the clan does not approve of such.

That said, the world has become far too sensitive when it comes to complaints of anyone offended. Whatever happened to "sticks and stones..."?

Is the actual word Jew an offense in its own right, or is selling items cheap considered a bad quality?

I mean, this guy didn't even get the Jewish stereotype right. Jews are usually stereotyped as greedy, not as selling stuff cheap. Maybe your excluded clan member is working a long time scheme deconstructing the (offensive) stereotype image of Jews;-)

I don't like racism or prejudice more than any of you guys, but you get further by creating awareness than by hostility. By the way, I bet you're all prejudiced to some extent.
