Re: Aggro, Taunt, Distract, Calm, and Wild Swing Explained!

One question... What happens when you use distract on a mob when you hold 1 aggro?

It doesn't reset but any aggro gained by another player will redirect its attention. Your explanation doesn't cover this example.

My theory is that a mob will attack the highest aggro holder in any case. However, the mob will engage in combat if...
abs(aggro) > 0

Any thoughts?

This might be a dumb question, but if 2 players have the same abs(aggro)... who does it attack.

Once you have aggo, it can not go lower than 1. Using distract on a mob when you have 1 aggro will keep it at 1, since it can not go lower.

The person who attacked it first (So if two people with same level taunt and ability levels only taunt a mob, the one who taunted first will get aggro). I am unsure what would happen if two people taunted at EXACTLY the same time, as I have never seen that happen...

There have been many people either wondering what aggro is or just saying silly things that are not true. So i have decided to teach you all what aggro really is:

Aggro is a number (a value). Each mob has a different value with this number towards each and every player. Now, the mob attacks the person with the highest aggro value. When you are "neutral" (away from mob), your aggro value to that mob is set to 0. If you are the first person to enter attacking range (eg: running up to a golem before someone else) the value is changed to 1 (this only effects the "offender", all other people around you still have 0 aggro until they attack). Attacking increases this value by a fraction of your damage dealt. Using skills on the person with the most aggro also increases your aggro.

Note: once your aggro is greater than or equal to 1, the mob will not stop attacking you until it either resets, or is killed
Note: Missed and Dodged attacks increase the aggro value by at least 1
Note: All non-self-cast skill increase aggro value by at least 1 (unless they are deflected)**
**This also applies to skill s such as distract, so if you use distract on a neutral mob it will start attacking you
Note: Once you have aggro, you can never have less than 1 aggro

Now, using these mechanics I will define some skills:

Taunt: Greatly increases your aggro value of the mob you cast it on
Warcry: Greatly increases your aggro value of mobs near a radius from the targeted mob
Distract: Greatly decreases your aggro value of the mob you cast it on
Play Dead: Makes the mob attack a different player (since you are dead) and decreases your aggro value by a bit
Calm: Greatly decreases your aggro value of all non-peaceful mobs

Now, I will help you all understand Wild Swing:

Wild Swing is different than all other AoE skills, and this is why:

1. It targets the "x" people with the most aggro (x=4 for Grimling, 5 for Askold, and 6 for Ymir)
2. Those people have to be in attack range of the boss (rangers do not get a free ride)
3. Winter Touch (a skill cast often by those bosses) sets all player's aggro to 1, allowing for people with little-to-no aggro to be hit.

I hope this small guide is helpful to you all.

This is good. Can I use some of this in my wisdomunderground wiki?
Nerfed Mage ~140
Why play a class where skills cost more than other classes for same damage?
Why play a class with no auto attack?
Why play a class with 1/3 the armor?
Why play a caster?

Copy this sig! :)

It's impossible to clear agro until the mob is dead .

If you run into a mobs range and do nothing to add to your agro , then a group comes and dies to the mob , the mob will then go back to the person that first ran in it's agro range .
This might be a dumb question, but if 2 players have the same abs(aggro)... who does it attack.

I believe it would be the person who cast taunt last , because I believe taunt slowly wears off and it's agro value decreases and that's why good tanks spam taunt/warcry , this is assuming identical tanks taunting (same gear, levels)

Thanks for the info. I bet it'd just be random after a simultaneous taunt.

Good tanks spam warcry/taunt because good DPS are always increasing their Aggro count.. I don't think the affect wears off, just other toons aggro counts are increased.

In terms of Ymir, I'm not sure if it's directly the 2nd highest aggro holder, but it sure seems it. The confusing part is that we have had Lure Mages and Druids targetted by Wild Swing.

I also thought that Winter Touch only sets the toons in front of Ymir's aggro count back to 1.. But it may in fact set everyone in the areas back to 1.. Interesting :)

Either way, great post and thanks for the info :)
