Hi there, we have been doing extensive testing and are looking into ways to make energy shield a better gameplay mechanic, currently it's very binary either you have a shield or you die which isn't that great. There should be several strategies rather than having to have a shield all the time, so with that in mind we will be looking into any suggestions about this. As always we will also be listening to any requests resulting in balance such as this one.
Hey Admin, since the start I have never used Energy Shield because I thought it just wasnt for me. I'm glad you guys are deciding to make it an optional skill instead of one that must be used. I know this seems alittle extreme but sadly the only way of fixing this problem is to increase the armor of mages to make it possible to survive. At the moment energy shield is not my concern, the decrease of the shield was not needed since it was weak anyway.
Since you don't use energy shield this may not be a solution you like Dean but what about having energy shield provide a passive boost to armor based on how high its skilled and then keep an active damage absorb like it has now? That would solve the problem of us not being able to solo unless its up and it could still be activated when needed for the absorb.
The Admin was asking for a game mechanic that could add another choice to building a mage.
I think energy-shield was fine for those who wanted to use it, and I've used hundreds of redbooks and found that energy shield doesnt actually need to be used by a mage. I think an armor boost would increase the need to always be using that skill which is what OTM is trying to stay away from. They could also add a new skill, but that would be doing the same thing they did with energy shield. The only difference we have from other classes is our armour, and that is the only fix to what the Admin is looking for.
Its a seasaw, Mages demand more DPS to make up for no armour, other classes complain, we lose our dps making us a low armour average dps class. People have also brought up "Mages are only support" and obviously thats never gonna work. Nothing is gonna work unless they decide to either increase or even Double all armor, or find a way to do immense amounts of damage but still have less damage as rogues.
How do we do that? It's a game mechanic called Nuking, and its the oldest trick in the book. Mages can nuke mobs, and be the strongest class for leveling but at the same time have a lower DPS than rogues and maybe even rangers. It's not as easy as that anymore, ever since evading was added their was no definitive kills on mobs since of the extremely high evade chance that mobs have on skills.
So back to my point. Their is only few ways to fix mages, they are a broken and unbalanced class and with the recent nerf of taking away %45 of Ice blast, then that means that we lose our strongest Nuke, bringing us down to an Average Damage, low armour, low dps class and whenever someone talks about our role in CH their is always those players
That think that we are a support class - which we will never be.
