Personally, I prefer Roots nowadays over Howling wind.

1) Howling Wind being *amended* which is not as godly as before. You need pump dex or get high defence items
2) Druids DPS lies in skills, granted we can melee to some degree when we use Hw. Skills are obviously the winner
3) With roots, I can kill all Dragon boss place holders. I cant achieve this with HW on Sreng and Troll.
4) Roots works best for ppl with sigils, You root the mob, vines and strike. While you are waiting for strike to reload, you have time for sigil to click in.
1)given, but thats because like touch, the effect didnt change much, while attack did increase a lot on mobs.
2)agreed
3)i havent tries, if thats true ima go roots asap.
4)not enough time to get an actual kick-in from sigils.

Say I'm just out of aggro range of a boss i just rooted. My group is doing the same, so we've created a circle around the boss. If someone on the other side of the circle gets aggro as I root it, the boss will continue to walk toward them and away from me. Remember its rooted, it WAS NOT avoided or resisted.
One thing many people do not understand is the mechanics behind Bolas and Roots. Here are some things you should know about the two:

1. The higher level wins. If a lvl 100 mob is bolased with lvl 30 bolas and rooted with lvl 20 roots, then the mob will still move.
2. If Bolas and Root's are the same, then the mob will follow the skill later casted. If you cast roots, and 3 secs later someone casts bolas, the mob will move.

Just a few points about roots that I have experienced, because it is currently in my leveling and boss build

1) the casting distance has been increased since update 3. It used to be 8m cast distance, and now it is 10m. It is designed ot be used as an opening move for druids.

2) I have this in my leveling build, and besides being good for soloing (as other people said) it is good for grouping with rangers. Bolas and root can keep a mob pinned down for a long time without taking any damage. The only time that we take any damage while leveing is when a firbolg casts "Wrath of Bolg". And I can easily heal that.

3) Roots lasts long enough to get a few ticks off on your sigils. Your character refreshes its status every 5 seconds. It takes 5 seconds (i think) to leave combat, it takes 5 seconds per tick for your sigils. So the first time that you will see your sigils kick in is 10 seconds after casting roots, and you will get two more ticks after that because roots lasts 20 seconds. So you will get three ticks of sigils in while roots is on.

4) while a mob is rooted, it attacks anything in melee range. However, tridents stay just a bit out of melee range when auto attacking. If you level with a rogue or warrior, suggest they use a spear or trident. Skewer will also help for when the mob evades roots.

5) It takes a lot of energy to use a roots/dps build. try to get your hands on some regular or heroic energization elixirs. They help a ton.

the 20 seconds is not enough, notice that to kill a mob, youll have to cast dmg skills, probably vines, strike and swarm. with the cooldown on strike youll be able to cast it before sigils kick in, so youll either have to wait or not let sigils kick in... this is the big issue with roots currently. and has been at update 3 as well. it worked in update 2, but then again, almost everything worked at update 2

I miss the rooting scrolls, they were amazing for bossing and solo levelling. Would be great if they were brought back :D

If memory serves, they were taken out because mobs now have a decent chance of evading skills... so an evaded scroll was equivalent to wasted plat.

If they were brought back, they would probably need to have a 100% chance of landing... otherwise people would nerdrage :geek: (← see the rage?)

I thought the plat items had no chance of being evaded? :ugeek:
I dont care if they can get evaded anyways, better than using 4 pots of a 4* mob *cough* unfathomable armor*cough* id rather just use a scroll to root for 60 seconds.

I think they were taken cos they were OP, i dont know though :ugeek:

Sounds cool morph but for us without the sig it's just plain ignorant due to handicap it brings on us. Mobs can get to you during the recast. You can't really get many other skills out after a vine cause you have to run away. So vines/ lightning strike. Most def gonna need some in energy harvest. The only way i would use roots as a soloing druid is if i had a 80% / regen mount
