The first thing a Mage should purchase (For Beginners)

#1
The greatest issue a mage suffers from is energy regeneration. Without energy sigils and points in meditation, you have to rely on the Tavern to recover energy.

The first thing a mage (New Player) should buy is the lvl 50 req Revenant Ring of Energisation. You should be able to purchase this for 18-20k from another player. Worst case, have a clan mate purchase it for you in the Otherworld for 25k. At lvl 50, you should have saved up 25k.

I can not think of anything more important for a new mage than the energy regeneration ring. I do not recommend the Bronze Amulet of Regeneration, unless you can find it for sell for less than 18k. The Silver Amulet of Regeneration is preferable as it gives 10 regeneration for 50k, this could be your second purchase. Silver is preferable over Golden because you can match Silver with a Revenant Bracelet of Energization for the same cost. The bracelet can be matched with a Revenant Bracelet of Invigoration later down the road.

The Ancient and castle armour do not provide enough benefit for the cost. I highly recommend the Darkshadow armour for new mages. It gives focus and a skill that compliments Cloak of Fire. You can get the gloves at lvl 30, the boots at 35, hat at lvl 40, legs at 45, and shirt at lvl 50. There should always be someone willing to help you with the quest. Stay cheap and continue the shadow armour quests in Stonevale.

1st: Revenant Ring of Energisation 18-25k, +5 energy regen, 20 energy
2nd: Silver Amulet of Energisation 40-50k, +10 energy regen, Armour 10, Energy 30.
3rd: Revenant Bracelet of Energisation 40-50k, +5 energy regen, Resist Heat Cold Magic 30, Energy 100

With 20 energy regeneration, you can throw a good amount of points in eshield to make health regeneration less of an issue.

I believe the items listed are still what a mage should buy first, but with one exception: Ice Attunement or Fire attunement.

With a maxed fire or ice attunement, you can do a lot of damage from fire bolt and firestorm, or ice shard and ice blast, respectively.

Considering firestorm is harder to buy and more expensive, Ice mage is cheaper to start. You can buy Ice Blast for around 5k, and Ice attunement for 5-10k. Fire attunement is usually more expensive, and firestorm can cost over 40-50k as it is harder to obtain.

The benefit of a fire mage is the ability to use cloak of fire with a decent lure. An ice mage could use cloak of fire, but the damage would not be as good without sacrificing skill points in lure of fire.

The goal for a non-plat player beginning a mage is to limit energy cost while having decent survival and constant damage output.

A maxed attune with rings would provide enough damage to kill things with 1-3 skill points in firebolt/firestorm or ice shard/iceblast.

If you're a new mage, I highly recommend waiting to put points in firebolt. At level 2, you get the cloak of fire skill on the second quest. I recommend putting every point there. Continue the quest line until you get to the castle. You will want to get energy shield from the skill seller and obtain energy boost from continuing the quest line. For every 3 points in energy shield, you will want 2 in energy boost.

You should be able to farm gold without having points in fire bolt because cloak of fire will provide the damage. This will give you the choice of which path you would like to go with an attunement book. If you decide ice, you will still have cloak of fire, but can use a book of alt from a quest given later in Catacombs. or use cloak with an ice build (cloak is the best gold generator for a mage, especially in catacombs). You want the ability to farm, so keeping cloak maxed as an ice mage ins't a bad choice, until maybe lvl 90.

There are people willing to pay 50-100 gold per present in the latest event. While this event may not be around soon, it is now. You can get 10 presents really fast in the tavern, which is a possible 500-1,000 gold if you sell them. Do this 10 times and you will have enough gold to try and purchase ice attune. If you want to go fire, do it a few more times until you can find someone selling it for 5-10k.

The sooner you get fire or ice attune, the better off you'll be. If you go ice, make obtaining the ice blast skill your second priority. If you go fire, a maxed fire attune with 1-3 points in fire bolt and a maxed cloak of fire with a good fire lure will be enough to get kills without firestorm. If you can get firestorm, you're sitting pretty.

You will want points in lure of fire or ice, depending on the path you take. If you're hitting less than half of your maxed damage (with attune and skill combined), than your lure is not bringing your target down to 0. Add points to lure until you notice you're always hitting above 50% of your maxed damage when lure is applied.

I highly recommend leveling in Fingals near the twisted tunnels leystone when you reach level 39. In fingals, the bats and rats drop skill books that can sell for decent gold. Double attack can fetch 10-15k. Ice blast also drops in fingals. The drops in Shale will not pay as well as the drops in Fingals. Rats and Bats also drop 1-3 Ice blast rings, although I do not advise using skill rings for damage other than attunement, as it will increase your energy consumption.

Learning to manage energy and keeping energy shield up long enough to land a kill are the keys to succeeding as a mage early in the game. You do not want to stand around wasting your game time waiting for energy. You can easily level a mage to 90 without investing a lot or any into platinum.

I also encourage all mages to avoid buying armor before lvl 60, which I don't think it wise to buy flint as well. The daily quest armor given near the Temple of Belenus is very good armor for a starting mage. Someone is always willing to help with the boss if you ask. Duskshadow, darkshadow, and spiritshadow will cost you nothing, give you a good amount of focus which improves your skills, and provides a skill that stacks with cloak of fire for faster farming. Plan wisely with your gold, because luxury items are expensive and provide a lot of benefits.

I am always willing to provide help with builds if you need, I have a lot of experience as a fire, ice, and hybrid mage. Remember that a build that works for you from level 1-100, may not be as effective from lvl 100-190. As a mage, it is important to adapt to your situation.

To be honest, if you're at the point where your lux has amounted to 1-2 mill+, you should start selling them and investing in energy sigils.

Instead of one million worth of lux, you could get 1000 sigils. So every 5 seconds out of combat, you're regenerating 1000 energy. It's a no brainer, imo.
